Procedure (58-89 minutes)
Write on the board: "I'd like to be...", "I wouldn't like to be...". Give SS two miniutes to complete the sentences as many times as they can with ideas from the board or their own ideas. Have SS to compare their sentences and find another student with the same sentences as them. Open class feedback.
Point to the four pictures and drill the name of each event. Teach "events" as a general word for all four pictures in ex 1A, p 64. Give SS time to choose an event they like and one they don't like and to think of their reasons why. Put SS into pairs to compare their answers.
Give SS one minute to read the texts quickly and find out which events Cara, Antonio, and Ava talk about 1B, p 64. Check answers as a class. Point to the photos of Cara, Antonio and Ava and ask: "What jobs do Cara, Antonio and Ava do?" (photographer, doctor, singer). Take feedback as an orally from the class.
Ask SS to read the texts again to find the cities the three people talk about in ex 1C, p 64. Check answers as a class. Ask: "Which word in the text means 'a group who work or plays sport together?" (team), "Which phrase means 'singing or playing music in different countries?" (on tour).
Elicit some adjectives to describe the people's lives and write them on the board (e.g., exciting, difficult, interesting, fun). Ask SS to talk about the three people's lives and say which of the three people they would like to meet and why in ex 1D, p 64. Take feedback as a class.
Write 2-3 example sentences on the board using Past Simple: be positive: "I was happy yesterday" "She was at the park last weekend" "They were in London last summer" Underline or color-code key parts: Verb "be" (past forms): was, were Time expressions: yesterday, last weekend, last summer Ask SS to notice the patterns and prompt with: "What are the past forms of "be"? "When do we use "was" and when do use "were"?" "Where is the time expression in the sentence?" Write today's date on the board and the word today, then yesterday's date on the board and yesterday. Write the following gapped sentence on the board: Today, I____ in London. Elicit the missing word (am). Then write the following on the board: Yesterday I___ in Dublin. Elicit the missing word (was). Have SS to complete the table in ex 2A, p 65. Check answers as a class.
Play the recording in ex 2B, p 65 for students to listen for whether or not "was" and "were" are stressed. Check the answer as a class. Play the recording again, the put SS into pairs to practice saying the sentences.
Ask SS to read the information in Grammar Focus 8A Part 1 on SB p.128. Play the recording where indicated and ask SS to listen and repeat.
Have SS to complete Exercise a in Part 1 on SB p.129. Check answers as a class by asking SS to read out the completed sentences. Tell SS to go back to SB p.65 in ex 2C.
Write on the board: "I was___ (where?) yesterday." Elicit a list of possible places (e.g., at home, at work, in the park, at school). Have SS to write sentences about where they were this morning, last night and yesterday afternoon in ex 2D, p 65. Monitor and help as necessary. Ask SS to compare their sentences. Were they in the same places? in ex 2E, p 65. Take feedback as an orally from the class.
Write "past time expressions" on the board. Elicit the past time expressions have seen so far in the lesson (e.g., yesterday, this morning, yesterday afternoon, last night) and write down on the board. Have SS to match the four sentences to the timeline in ex 3A, p 65. Ask SS to use the words in the box to replace the underlined words in 3a in ex 3B, p 65. Have SS to complete the exercises in Vocabulary Focus 8A on SB p.149. For Exercise a, point to the days of the week on the diary page and play the recording for students to listen and repeat. Give SS one minute to complete Exercise b, then put them in pairs to compare their answers in ex 3C, p 65. Take feedback as a class.
Ask SS: "Who are Cara, Antonio, Ava?", "Are they friends?", "What do think about which topic is talking it?"
Remind SS about Cara, Antonio, and Ava. Ask: "Who's singer?" (Ava), "Who's a photographer?" (Cara), "What's Antonio's job?" (doctor). Play the recording in ex 4A, 65 for students can listen and identify which of the three people is speaking. Have SS to compare answers in pairs. Play the recording again if necessary. Check answers as a class. Have SS to match the events with the adjectives. Play the recording in ex 4B, p 65 for them to check their answers. Check answers as a class.
Play the recording in ex 4C, p 65 for SS to read and complete conversation 1 with the words in the box. Check answers as a class. Point out that we stress "was" when it appears in a short answer. Yes, it was.

"They weren't happy with the results" Underline or color-code key parts: Past Simple "be" forms (was, were, wasn't, weren't) Question word order (Were/Was + subject) Negative word order (was not/ wasn't, were not/ weren't) Ask SS to notice the patterns and prompt with: "Where does "was/were" go in a question?" "How do we make the negative form of "be"?" "Do we use "did" with the verb in the past?"
Ask SS to read the information in Grammar Focus 8A Part 2 on SB p.128. Play the recording where indicated and ask SS to listen and repeat.
Have SS to complete Exercises a and b in part 2 on SB p.129. Check answers as a class. Tell SS to go back to SB p.65 in ex 4D. Have SS to complete the conversation with "was, were, wasn't or weren't". Play the recording in ex 4E, p 65 for SS to check their answers. Check answers as a class.
Divide the class into groups of three and assign A, B, and c roles. Student As look at the questions and information on SB p.113. Student Bs do the same on SB p.111, and Student Cs on SB p.115. Student A asks Student B questions, Student B asks Student C questions and Student C asks Student A questions. Monitor and note down any common mistakes to deal with when giving feedback. Check the answer as a class.
