Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

At the start of the lesson, ask Ss if they are hungry, invite two or three students to share what they've eaten for breakfast/lunch. Say that you've just eaten your favourite dish and invite Ss to guess what it is from your description. Describe as in the example below: "This is a dessert, it's very colorful and pretty. One of the ingredients is fruit. This kind of fruit is long, sweet and soft. On the plate between two fruit pieces there are three balls of something cold: one brown, one pink and one white. There is chocolate, cream and cherries for decoration. What is it?" (Answer: Banana Split). Choose a common dish that your students will know.

Vocabulary Revision (5-7 minutes) • To engage prior knowledge of food vocabulary

Ask: what other fruit desserts do you know? Can you name three? (Reward the first Ss who come up with an answer) Suggest turning it into a contest. Separate Ss into groups of 3, give out a marker, a mini white board and an eraser to each group (alternatively, use paper). Explain that you will name food categories, and the groups will try to remember and write three examples on their mini board as fast as possible. The first group to finish needs to raise their board, which ends the round. Then students from the other groups check the winning group's spelling and pronunciation. If there are no mistakes, the winners get 2 points for this round. Substract 1 point for spelling/pronunciation mistakes. Keep score on the board. Suggested categories: 1) dishes with garlic/cocoa/tomatoes... 2) purple fruits 3) dishes that mix boiled and fresh vegetables 4) vegetarian breakfast foods 5) yellow drinks 6) soft and sweet 7) hard and healthy 8) grilled dishes 9) ways to cook meat 10) popular sandwiches etc. Don't keep the game going too long, the idea is to gauge how the Ss remember the vocabulary, and a quick revision of different ways they can describe food items. Reward the three top teams with something edible, different for each group (e.g. apple pieces, carrot pieces, candies, cheese pieces, a small plate of crisps, etc.) Encourage Ss to share their food with other groups.

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide a model of the task

Ask: are apple slices, carrot pieces and crisps (name the foods you used as prizes for the previous task) a good meal? Would you surprise your date with such a dinner? Would you pay for it in a restaurant? Get feedback. Say: Imagine you are all restaurant critics. A fancy new restaurant asked you to review their romantic dinner menu in a way that is attractive for new customers. Separate students into pairs. Have each pair draw three cards: one Starter card, one Main Course card and one Dessert card. Each card should have a picture, the name of the dish and a list of ingredients + how they are cooked, e.g.: 'Caprese salad (sliced fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, basil leaves, with salt and olive oil).' Set the task. Ss have to work in pairs to write a review of this three course meal to make it sound attractive. Inform Ss that, after they present their reviews, they will vote for the best meal. Write the template on the board: "A Delicious Meal for a dinner date This three-course meal is full of flavor and color. Each dish is special and made with care. It’s a perfect meal for a romantic evening. Starter: (Name) (Description) Main Course: (Name) (Description) Dessert: (Name) (Description) This meal is (positive description). It’s a wonderful experience from beginning to end."

Task (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Students prepare their review. Set a time limit. Monitor but don't assist with the vocabulary. Remind Ss that the descriptions must sound appetizing.

Planning (4-5 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to plan students' reports

Inform Ss that their writing time is up, and now they have 5 minutes to prepare for their presentation. Set the presentations order if needed. Remind them that each member of the team has to speak during the presentation.

Report (8-12 minutes) • To allow students to demonstrate their productive skills

Organize the presentations. Encourage Ss to take short notes as they listen, especially if you have a bigger group. They can rate presentations as follows: 'Team # Dishes How good the meal sounds: 1-5 How good (artistic, emotional, believable) the presentation is: 1-5' After the final presentation, have students vote for the best meal review, reward the winners.

Language Analysis (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the task language

Have the Ss read the model meal review. "A Delicious Meal for a dinner date This three-course meal is full of flavor and color. Each dish is special and made with care. It’s a perfect meal for a romantic evening. Starter: Roasted Beet Salad with Goat Cheese and Sweet Walnuts The first dish is a colorful beet salad. The beets are soft and thinly sliced, with smooth goat cheese on top, which tastes creamy and a little sour. Sweet walnuts are crunchy and add an interesting texture. Thick, sweet balsamic sauce brings everything together. Main Course: Duck Breast with Cherry Sauce and Mashed Potatoes The main course is juicy duck breast. The skin is crispy, and the meat is tender and warm. The cherry sauce is sweet and sour, which matches the rich, savory flavor of duck. The mashed potatoes are creamy and smooth. Grilled green vegetables on the side add a fresh taste and a little crunch. Dessert: Chocolate Tart with Sea Salt and Orange Cream The final dish is a rich chocolate tart. The chocolate is smooth and dark, and the crust is crispy and flaky. A little sea salt on top makes the chocolate taste even better. The orange cream on the side is light and sweet, with a little burnt taste that adds something special. This meal is beautiful, tasty, and balanced. It’s a wonderful experience from beginning to end." Ask Ss if this meal sounds attractive or not (unless someone hates beets). Ask them to analyze how the review makes the dishes sound tasty. Give a couple of minutes to work in pairs and underline the adjectives used to describe food (make sure they understand what an adjective is), ask feedback. Show the pictures and elicit the meaning of the words from the Ss. Clarify understanding of the meaning by asking Ss to give more examples of what can or can't be described with the adjective. Drill pronunciation. Have Ss write down the words with some examples, highlight possible spelling difficulties.

Language Practice (15-20 minutes) • To provide students with practice of the task language

Separate Ss into different pairs, have them draw a starter, a main course and a dessert card again. The new pairs need to write and present a review for the selected three course meal. For their presentation they should come up with a recommendation for the meal (perfect for a friends' night out / a business lunch with colleagues / a teenager's birthday party / etc.)

Homework task (0-0 minutes) • to provide practice of the learnt language

Task 1 (practice meaning) A multiple choice: select suitable adjectives to describe foods. Fresh cabbage: a. crunchy b. tender c. spicy Walnuts: a. sour b. umami c. slimy Brownie cake: a. flaky b. savory c. rich pineapple: a. dry b. crumbly c. juicy ...
