In this lesson, students will improve their reading skills, find out how to understand a text in English without looking up every single word they do not know and at the same time learn vocabulary about clothing, hairstyles and make-up with the help of visual materials in the context of youth cultures in America and Europe.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about the clothing, hairstyles and music of trends in the context of youth cultures in America and Europe.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of clothing, hairstyle and make-up vocabulary in the context of youth cultures in America and Europe.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Context building - Start a talk about young people social groups and trends - May be, explain the meaning of the word "trend"

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

- Show them the photos, put the photos about trends on the board - Get them to talk about the trends, answering the questions in the handout exercise 1

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

- Get them to read the text in order to explain what the title means - Before they read, make a short explanation on how to read for gist - Peercheck the answers

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

- Put the photos for vocabulary on the board - Get them to read and match the underlined words/phrases in the text to the photos - Do the language clarification (meaning, form and pronunciation)

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

- Get them to discuss the answers to the questions in the handout exercise 5
