Description

In this lesson, students will listen to a man living in Vancouver talking about Vancouver,its places,weather and why it is the best place in the world.

Materials

  • To give students practice in listening for gist, specific and detail information through the context of Vancouver, Canada.

Procedure

Lead in (3-5 minutes) • to lead the ss in the lesson and to build up a context.

I will show ss a map of Canada and ask them the following questions: What is this country? Where is it? What important cities are there? What is the weather like in Winter? What sports can people play then? What is the weather like in summer? What sports can people play then? I will elicit answers from ss.

Blocking Vocabulary (5-7 minutes) • To help ss understand the meaning of some important words that are important for the listening Exercise.

I will show ss some pictures of different sports activities. I will give ss strips of the sports names and I will ask ss to stick the name under the correct picture. I will drill with the ss.

Listening for a gist. (6-8 minutes) • To listen for the main idea .

I will give ss an exercise. I will ask them to look at the pictures and read the exercise. I will ask ss to listen to the CD and tick the boxes Steve talks about. ICQs. Are you going to listen to Steve talking about the things he does in Vancouver? Yes. Are you going tick the boxes for the things he is talking about? Yes I will ask ss to check answers in pairs. I will get the answers from ss I will check answers with ss

Listening for specific information (6-8 minutes) • To get more information about the listening exercise

I will give ss some questions. I will ask them to read questions and their answers. Then, I will ask them to listen again and choose the correct answers. ICQS. Are you going to listen to the same conversation again? Yes. Are you going to to choose the correct answer for each question? Yes. Ss will listen to the CD.I will monitor. Ss will check answers in pairs. I will check the answers with ss.

Listening for detailed information. (6-8 minutes) • To get more details about the listening exercise.

I will give ss an exercise about the four conversations. I will ask them to listen and to match the each conversation with the correct information. ICQs. Are you going to listen to four conversations? Yes. Are you going to match each conversation with the correct information? Yes. Ss will listen to the CD. I will monitor. Ss will check answers in pairs. I will check the answers with ss.

Speaking activity (6-8 minutes) • To help ss to practice using the target language.

I will divide the class into pairs and give them a list of questions they are going to ask each other about their hometowns. Students will change roles. ICQs. Are you going to work in pairs? Yes. Are you going to ask your partnerr some questions about his/her hometown? Yes. I will monitor trying to listen in discreetly to get any errors which I can write on board and correct them for ss.

A Filler (5-7 minutes) • to use this exercise as a filler

If there is any time left, I will ask ss to write a paragraph about their hometown by answering the questions in the exercise.
