Description

In this lesson, students learn about the past continuous through PPP, focused on speaking and discussion. The lesson starts with a song about the past continuous in the context of friendship. This is followed by showing some GIFs, pausing them, and asking Ss, What were they doing? Then there is a speaking task where students talk about what they were doing with their friends yesterday.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will tell the students a short story about my experience using the past continuous. For example:I was looking for the ticket at this time yesterday.Then, I will ask them:What were you doing yesterday at this time?"

Highlighting (1-2 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will write some of the sentences that my students have made in the correct form on the board to draw their attention to the TL.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will clarify the meaning of the past continuous by drawing a timeline and then explaining the structure and the situations in which we use past continuous. After that, I will use the sentence "I was reading a newspaper" as a reference and ask CCQs: Was it yesterday or now? (Yesterday)Was it just a short action or a long action? (Long action) Did something else maybe happen during this action? (Maybe) Which one is the long action? (brown) Then, I will play a video about the past continuous grammar to create a smoother and more relaxed atmosphere for the students before continuing the lesson

Controlled Practice (3-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The students are going to do Exercise 2B, questions 1 to 5, on page 129 in the Grammar Bank in 2 minutes. They will have 2 minutes to check their answers.

Free Practice (4-4 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will put the students into pairs and ask them to explain the TL to each other. Then, they will share their best memory of a time when their mom suddenly came into their room
