Description

In this lesson Ss will be introduced to Past Perfect Simple in the context of holidays. There will be an introduction to the form and then Ss will practice their productive skills to tasks like fill in the gaps and sentence matching. If time allows there will be a pronunciation session, where Ss, after they listen to the correct pronunciation, will practice their speaking for accuracy skills through a speaking task.

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation using Past perfect simple in the context of holidays

Procedure

Lead-in/Clarification (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Have a brief conversation about the text with the Ss. Ask them if they went/want to visit Africa. Then write on board: We wanted to remember all we had seen.... a)We saw things b)We wanted to remember Ss work in pairs to talk about the sentence and answer the Qs above. (1 minute) Monitor. W/C feedback. Draw a timeline to explain the that Past perfect/Past simple is used to describe an event happened before another in the past. Form: had/hadn't + verb(+ed)/irregular verbs' form

Reading for detail task, identifying the target language in a text (6-8 minutes) • To provide practice in identifying Past Perfect Simple using their reading skills

Script: Read the article again and find examples of Past Perfect Simple. Demonstrate by reading the first sentence of the article. ICQ: Is there any example of Past Perfect Simple here? Yes/No. If yes where? Start reading now. You have 3 minutes. Monitor. Peer check. Ss check each others papers and compare their answers. (1 minute) Feedback: Ss are given the key answers to check.

Productive task 1, controlled activity: writing (5-7 minutes) • To provide Ss with practice using the target language in a controlled writing activity

Script: At exercise 7 put the verbs in the correct tense. Demonstrate the first one by nominating a Ss. ICQ: eg. Yasemin, can you please read the first sentence? What is the correct tense? Do you all agree? Work in pairs. Start now. You have 2 minutes. Monitor Feedback: Ss peer check. T nominates pairs. Are your answers the same? Yes/No. If not what is different? Elicit the correct from Ss. After that Ss are given the key answers.

Productive Task 2, semi controlled activity: writing (15-17 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Exercise 8. Script: Part A: Match the sentence beginnings from A with the sentence endings at B. Work in pairs. Demonstrate: Read the 1st sentence from A. ICQ: what is the correct match from B? C. Does everyone agree? Yes/No. If not why? Ask ss to peer teach in that case. (2 minutes) Check for understanding: What do you have to do? Are you working together? Monitor. Feedback: w/c feedback. Pairs share their answers in a row. e.g. Pair a: 1 - c etc. Confirm with w/c. Part B: Script: In exercise 8 change a verb in the Past Perfect Simple in each sentence. Demonstrate: Write the first sentence on the w/b and elicit from Ss the correct answer. Write it on board: I got lost in the city because....Ss fill the rest. Work alone. (3 minutes) Monitor. Feedback: Ss will peer check and then they will listen the answers through audio. * At this point Ss will focus on pronunciation of had (affirmative) and hadn't (negative) by listening again and repeating the sentences.

Follow up activity (7-8 minutes) • To provide Ss with a semi controlled speaking practice using the target language

Script: Divide the Ss in 2-3 groups (depending on attendance). Discuss with your group if you have ever been in any of the situations in exercise 8. Demonstrate with a Ss: eg. Yasemin, have you ever been in any of the situations in exercise 8? ICQ: What do you have to do? Are you working alone? (3 minutes) Feedback: Did you find something interesting? Ss discuss with class.
