Main Aims

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a debate in the context of liability of the tips provided in the show and finding out if they are a positive/negative thinker

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The students will be asked about their views on positive thinking. Have they found this method helpful in their life and if so, is it necessary to be consistent with it.

Pre-Listening (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The students will learn about the meanings of the words "optimistic" and "pessimistic" and their relation. First the direct meaning of the words will be explained to them then they will be asked to fill the blank in the examples I've prepared, with either "optimistic" or "pessimistic".

While-Listening #1 (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

In this stage, the students will first listen to the introduction of the radio show (first part of the Audio) Then they will be asked to do exercise b from the listening part, page 46 and try to guess the words in the callers' tips. And then they will listen to the rest of the radio show to check their guesses.

While-Listening #2 (6-9 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

The students will listen to the audio again and will be asked to write down extra info they hear from each tips. Then they will debate liability of the tips and will be asked to provide some tips of their own if they can come up with any.

Post-Listening (5-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

In this stage, the students will be asked to say what they think about the statements in the speaking part of the page 47, with the appropriate phrases, to compare themselves with each other and to discuss and find out who is more of a positive/negative thinker amongst them.
