Description

In this lesson, places vocabulary will be presented by discussion and practised by doing a matching activity. The differences among a big city,a small town and a village will be focused on. Pictures of 3 different places will be used to familiarize students with the places mentioned in the audio.Students will listen for gist and match the conversations to the pictures and what each conversation is about. Student will listen for detail and match the places to the sentences. Students will discuss which place they would like to visit and why. The most popular place will be chosen.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Tell students where you live and ask where they live.Tell them what you can see in your neighbourhood. Ask them to tell their partners what they can see in their neighbourhood.

Pre-Listening (9-11 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Give the handout and tell them to tick the words they know in exercise 1 individually in 1 minute. Ask them to compare their answers with their partners. Tell students to match the words to the pictures in exercise 2 on their own in 3 minutes. Reflect the coloured version of the pictures.Ask them to check their answers in groups. Give the answer key to groups. Give example to clarify the differences among a big city, a small town and a village. Show the pictures of 3 different places.Elicit which one is a town/a city/a village. Tell them to talk in groups what we can see in those places by using the focused vocabulary in the previous stage.

While-Listening #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide a listening practice with less challenging gist

Ask student to listen to three conversations.Students write the letter of the sentence people talk about and the name of the place individually.Tell them to check their answers with their partner. Check the answers together.

While-Listening #2 (6-11 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening task

Ask students to look at the sentences in exercise 4. Play the audio twice and students choose which place each sentence is about. Remind them there are 3 sentences for each place.Students check their answers in groups. Give them the answer key. Focus on the stressed words in the sentences(optional)

Post-Listening (8-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Group students. Tell them to discuss which place they would like to visit and why by using the vocabulary reviewed before. Students share their answers with the class by giving reasons for their choices. Choose the most popular place.
