Description

In this lesson students will revişe nationalities briefly. They will listen to a conversation for gist and detailed information in the context of jobs and personal information. They will also practise to ask Wh- questions with 'to be'.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students and to revise the previous lesson.

Handout sets of cards as one per pair, on each of which one country and a thing specific to that country is written. (E.g. the USA / Beyoncé). Ask students to say the name of the country to his/her friend and show the card so that the pair can see the item that is specific to that country. The pair will say the nationality and make a sentence with the item. A: The USA. B: American. Beyoncé is an American (singer). Instructions: Please share these cards. One of you say the country, please and show it to your friend. (model) Your friend says the nationality (model) and make a sentence with the word on the card. (model) Monitor closely and give individual feedback if necessary.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Write "jobs" on the board and ask "What is it?" Ask sts to think of some jobs and note them down. Stick pictures of jobs on the board and ask "Do you have any of them in your notes?" and ellicit answers. Ask sts to look at the words in the box and match them with the pictures in pairs. Ask sts to come and write them under the pictures. Point out word stress and drill individually and chorally. SAy that the main stress in taxi driver is the first syllable of taxi, tough we aldo stress the first syllable of driver. Also highlight /ə/ sound at the end of doctor /actor/ teacher Draw a stickman (Jim) and a stickwoman(Jane) on the board and ask students "tell me the jobs for Jim and Jane. write "an actor / a waiter / a policeman" under Jim, "an actress / a waitress / a policewoman" under Jane. Specify that we always use a/an with jobs.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Show pictures for the words in the box in 2a. (stick them on the board) a friend / beautiful / married / single Explain the meanings and drill individually and chorally. Ask sts to look at the picture on page 17. Ask "What's her name? Tina" / What's his name? Matt. Now, look at the pictures, please. "What are they talking about? Friends." Please listen, and match the names with the pictures. All class feedback.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

**If the class looks strong enough "Before listening again, please try to fill in the chart in pairs" **If the class is not strong enough "Now listen again and fill in the chart." Handout the script of listening text to the sts and ask them to listen and check.

Post-Reading/Listening (12-16 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ask sts to look at exercise 3 on page 16. Give out sets of jumbled cards to each pair and ask them to put them in the correct order. Write the sentence structure at the top of the board: Question Word + am/are/'s + person or thing + ......... Ask sts to stick the sentences on the board. Under the correct structure item. Drill the sentences individually and chorally. Explain that we use "where" to ask for a place and "what" to ask about a thing (a name, a job, etc.) Highlight that we do not use contracted forms of "am" and "are" in questions. 4b. Ask students to come to the front and look at the pictures on page 17 again and ask and answer questions by changing pairs for each person. A: What's his name? B: Gary. A: Where's he from? B: Australia. A: What's his job? B: He's a doctor.
