Description

In this lesson, learners learn some adjectives to read a postcard about a holiday. T elicits the adjectives by using visuals and asks ss to match the adjectives with the pictures. T pre-teaches some essential vocabularies by matching the definitions to appropriate words to remove the blocks of students' minds. Then, T provides ss with a question for the gist of reading and asks ss to skim the text quickly. T gives some other questions for specific information and ss scan the text. T gives some questions to ss to read for detail. T assigns a writing for the post-task activity.

Main Aims

Procedure

Lead-in/ warmer (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T sticks some pictures of Istanbul, a Turkish singer, football player, and food to elicit the adjectives. After that, T asks learners to match the adjectives with appropriate sentences, Ss do it in pair. T divides ss into two groups of red and blue and sticks the sentences for each group on the board. T asks the ss to match the adjectives with the appropriate sentence. T gives them the answer key for FB. T sticks some other adjectives on the board and asks the ss to match them with the appropriate pictures. The ss do it in pair then stand up and check the others' answers. T nominates one student to choose one of the classmates to answer (FB),

pre-reading (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T sticks some pictures of her holiday in Istanbul such as food, hotel and sightseeing and asks ss to look at these pictures and write what words come to their minds (e.g. hotel, delicious food, etc). T asks learners to check their answers in pair, then nominates one student to read his/her words. T asks ss to underline the words that they have already written.They do it individually.T pre-teaches some essential words by matching activity. Ss do it individually and the in pair. T nominates a student to ask one of the classmates to answer (FB).

WHILE-READING 1 (1-2 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

t gives ss a question about the main idea of the text and ss have one minute to skim. ss do it individually. Then, they check it in pair. For FB, T sticks the answers outside the classroom and asks two ss to go out to find them and read them for their groups.

While-Reading 2 (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

T gives ss some questions to scan the text to find specific information. They do it in pair and T sticks the answer key under their chair for FB. T gives ss some questions to read for detail and ss have to read the text for more challenging questions. They check the answers in pair and T sticks the answer key on the wall for FB.

Post-reading (10-13 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T asks ss to write a postcard to a friend by using some clues. They do it in pair. T gives them a handout including some wh- questions and ss stand up and go round the class to find a partner and ask the questions about their postcards and write the names of their classmate on the handout. T nominates one student to answer the questions about the friend.
