Main Aims

  • To provide detailed listening practice using a text about the reasons why we are so impatient in the context of daily life

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of the reasons why we are so impatient

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The students will be asked to imagine these different situations and then answer the "Would you rather..." questions. When shopping online, would you rather pay extra for same-day delivery or wait 5 days? Would you rather be stuck in traffic or take a longer route? Imagine you're meeting a friend, would you rather be early and wait 20 minutes or arrive five minutes late so you don't have to wait?

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The students will be taught the meaning of these vocabularies used in the text: Instant, immediately, growth, extremely. I will introduce the meaning of each word, and then ask the students to match the meaning of each vocabulary to the words, and give an example, and then I will ask the students some CCQs. for example, for immediately, the CCQs will be: do you wait? No. does it happen right now? Yes.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

The students will be asked to listen to the audio file and answer question 1. The audio file is about five people doing five different things. The students will first be asked to give a gist of what the speakers are talking about and how their lives have changed over the last three years. And then they will be asked to write the number of speaker in front of each topic.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

The students will be asked to first read the questions a-e on part B, and then the audio file will be played again. The students will have 2 minutes to write the number of the speaker in front of each sentence. First, they are asked to answer the questions individually, and then we will check with the whole class. They will need to support their ideas on why they marked each sentence with a number, and also need to support their ideas if they came up with different answers.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students will be asked to answer the following questions: How has your life changed over the last three years? Do you have more or less time? Why? What don't you have time for nowadays? What would you like to have more time for?
