Serena Serena

Beginner level

Description

The following lesson will be focused on reading. During the warmer, the context will be briefly set through some photos of famous top models. That will be the input to elicit the TL (question words) from students and to involve them into the class. Then, students will experience two different reading approaches (for gist and for detail), by analyzing a text about a top model replying her fans' questions on her website. The last stage of the lesson will be about writing (sub aim): students will be asked to write some questions to ask to their teacher.

Procedure

Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set the context and engage Ss

Ss will be shown three photos of famous top models of different nationalities. They will be stuck on the WB and will serve as an input for a brainstorming. T will say "Talk about them in pairs. 2 minutes". Then, T will wait for Ss to express their ideas/opinions about them and to say what they know/imagine about them. After listening to them, T will write around each photo "age", "name", "country" and wait their reaction. When it will be clear that they don't know these details, T will say "Don't you know them?! Then, ASK ME!".

Pre-teach Vocabulary (8-10 minutes) • To introduce and clarify the TL

Ss will start asking the needed questions and T will give short answers to them. Then, T will try to elicit more and different questions, in order to introduce the TL and analyze it with them (if needed, T will write on the WB some keywords: job, home, people, reason..). T will firstly focus on their meaning. CCQs: "Is it for people or things?", "Are we talking about place or time?"; EXTENSION: "Why do you study English? Do you like it? Then you study English because you like it", "Why are you wet?/It’s raining outside". Then, T will clarify the form, writing on the WB: WH QW+Aux.Verb (do/does-am/is/are)+Subj+Lex.Verb How are you? Who is she? Where are you from? What do you do? Why do you study English? Where does she live? WH QW+Obj (Pl.Count.Noun)+Aux.Verb (do/does)+Subj+Lex.Verb How many sisters do you have? While illustrating the form, T will drill them and highlight their falling intonation: How many-How many sisters-How many sisters do you have? To conclude and to clarify further, T will give Ss a handout with a very quick matching activity that clearly shows the use of the most common question words. T will just hand it to them and get their answers. .

Reading for gist (5-8 minutes) • To give Ss the chance to experience a quick reading for a general comprehension

T will stick on the WB a fourth picture and use it to present the text. T will say "She's...(Ss: top model).. her name is Gina Macy and she has got a website (writing the word on the WB). This text is from her website". Then, T will give them the handout and say "You will look at the text and do this ALONE. 3 minutes". ICQs: "Are you reading ALL the text or just looking for these (pointing at the HO)?", "Are you doing it in pairs or alone?". Later, T will tell them "Compare you answers in pairs", then the whole class will check them together and T will write the answers on the WB.

Reading for detail (12-15 minutes) • To let Ss approach to a more detailed and intensive reading

T will show the HO with the questions to complete and answer and will say "Please, complete these questions with WH words. 2 minutes" (they will work in pairs, this time mixed). ICQs: "Will you answer or just complete them?", "Will you work in pairs or alone". She will write the answer key on the WB and say "Now, read the text again and underline the answers in it. Work alone. 10 minutes". ICQs: "Will you write the answers or underline them?", "Will you work in pairs or alone?". T will ask them to compare their answers in pairs and then will discuss them with the whole class.

Semi-controlled Practice (writing) (5-7 minutes) • To let Ss use the TL within the lesson context

T will stick the last photo on the WB. It's her own picture. She will introduce it "This is Serena's website. You can ask her some questions. Write 2 questions each ALONE. 1 minute". ICQ: "How many questions?", "Will you write them together or alone?". Then T will ask Ss to stand up and mingle "Please, stand up and go around. Check the others and see if they wrote the same questions". "Did you find the same questions? Ok, discuss all together and try to make different questions. I want X questions ALL different. 3 minutes". Ss will compare their questions and try to make different ones. Then, they will ask the teacher.
