Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of vocabulary about learning in the context of English language learning

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text asking for advice about learning English in an online forum
  • To provide accuracy in the context of describing activities related to learning

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students in ways of learning

Ask students to answer the following questions in pairs: Do you prefer learning by reading, watching, listening, or doing? Can you describe something you learned recently? How did you learn it? Do a demo of the questions first. Monitor and DEC

Gist task (4-5 minutes) • to provide familiarity with the text

For task 1, have students read the text and answer the questions at the bottom of the handout individually. Give them 3 minutes to do this. Give them a minute to compare their answers in pairs.

Intensive reading (2-3 minutes) • To focus the learners' attention on the TL sentences

For task 2, have students highlight the words reread, look up, subtitles, study online, do the exercises individually. Give them 2 minutes to solve this activity individually.

Language clarification (15-18 minutes) • to highlight and clarify meaning, form, and pronunciation of the TL

Write the sentences from the text on the board: Read and reread news websites everyday. Look up the words in a dictionary. Why don’t you watch films in English (without the subtitles!)? I think you should study online. You should get a good grammar book and do the exercises. Use the Vocabulary Analysis Sheet to cover TL of the first 3 sentences. 1. Phonology in "Read and reread" 3. Phonology in "Why don't you watch" CCQ for question 4. Ask Ss where people studied during Covid. Form: transitive verb in this case, "study how?", 4 syllables, stress in first and fourth syllable, in the sentence, the fourth syllable has more stress overall. CCQ for question 5. Ask Ss what happens when we answer an activity. Show them the handout for task 3. Say "What do we do? We do the...". Transitive verb. Pronunciation, 3 syllables, stress on the first one. Not Exersaizes, but exersizehs.

Language Practice (7-8 minutes) • To make learners use the TL in a controlled and freer manner

Tell Ss they will receive a handout where they have to fill in the blanks with the words in the word bank. Tell them that they will have 3 minutes to complete the activity in pairs. Give the handouts and demo with the example. Monitor during the activity. Check answers as a group.

Freer Practice (3-4 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Make the Ss switch partners and discuss the following questions using the TL How often do you do the learning activities we discussed? Which of these learning activities are the most important to you? Do you have any other ideas on how to improve your English? Monitor and DEC

Feedback (2-3 minutes) • to provide feedback on the completion of the task

Ask the students what they think about the learning methods we discussed. DEC correction.
