Description

Students will learn and practice the use of gerunds and infinitives, focusing on verbs that are followed by each form and how meaning can change. The lesson includes guided discovery, pair work, and sentence production for fluency and accuracy.

Main Aims

  • To develop learners’ ability to use gerunds and infinitives appropriately after verbs, prepositions, adjectives, and certain expressions.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To improve pronunciation by practicing the weak form of “to” and consonant linking. To enhance listening and speaking fluency through the theme of surviving your first day at work and talking about happiness. To build vocabulary for everyday situations and emotional experiences.

Procedure

Warm-up (5-8 minutes) • To set the tone for the context

Write on board: “What makes you happy?” Pair work: Students discuss things that make them happy (e.g., "a song", "a warm shower") Ask 2–3 students to share ideas with the class Transition: "Let’s look at how others define happiness..."

Vocabulary & Grammar: Gerunds in Context (10-15 minutes) • To review the usage of gerunds

Cartoon Reading Students look at the Instagram-style cartoons on p.56 Task: Choose 3 they agree with most Pair discussion of their choices Gerund Analysis Students find examples of gerunds in the cartoons Write on board: after a preposition (e.g. before leaving) as a subject (e.g. Reading is fun) after specific verbs (e.g. enjoy reading) Practice with Gerunds Students complete p.158 Vocabulary Bank: Verb forms Part 2 Pair check → Class feedback Final check Hand over the HO

Pronunciation Focus: -ing and /ə/ Sound (5-10 minutes) • Drill the pronunciation

Play audio 7.9 – students listen to words ending in -ing Practice: Students repeat & identify stress Audio 7.10: Minimal pairs with different /ə/ pronunciations Matching task → board feedback Optional game: Say a word – partner guesses spelling or meaning

Listening: The Bank of Happiness (15-20 minutes) • To go over the exercises in Listening section

Pre-Listening (5 min) Ask: “What do you think a 'Bank of Happiness' does?” Board 3 options from p.57 → predict in pairs b.
