203 Session 1
B1 level

Description

In this session we will go over the Reading and Listening part of Unit 7A.

Materials

Abc Whiteboard, markers

Main Aims

  • To help students develop their reading for gist and specific information skills through a text that provides tips on how to survive the first day in a new office.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To develop students’ listening for gist and detail skills through a conversation between two people experiencing common workplace challenges, and to provide opportunities for personal response and comparison with the reading text.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Imma start by writing down the question "How to survive….??" and elicit ideas from the students, then I will ask the students to give tips regarding each question and we will discuss it as a speaking activity.

Pre-Reading / While Reading (10-15 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

In this section, I will ask the students to look at the photo and tell me what they think about the first day in an office job and ask them to give me tips without looking at the text and also I will explain the task which is for each of them to read a paragraph so I can evaluate their reading skills and talking about if the tip is useful or not.

Post-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

After finishing the article, I will ask the students to go over the exercises which I have previously explained and did the required ICQs about and then check the answers as a whole class activity by asking each of them individually.

Pre-Listening (3-5 minutes) • To explain the Listening task to the students

This listening is not challenging, but it is rather long so I will explain the first task and tell the students what they are going to hear and prepare them for what they are going to find as the answer to the first question then I will play the audio and will elicit the answer from all of them.

Post-Listening (5-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

After students listened to the audio file for the first time. I will ask them to read the next exercises and prepare themselves for what they are going to find as an answer. They will have a couple of seconds to go over the statements written in the exercise and then I will play the audio file and check the answers with the whole class.

Clarification (5-10 minutes) • To review the usage of infinitive for students and go over the respective exercises

I will ask the students to guess the answers before we check the article for the answers and then we will go to vocabulary bank on page 158 and I will explain the task thoroughly and will ask the students to work on the answers in pairs and after that we will check the answers with the whole class.

Homework • To give student something to do at home

I will explain the writing task and we will tell the students that they can have their own ideas and they have to write a writing with four tips about a "survival" situation that they wanna talk about.
