To provide gist reading practice using a text about advantages and disadvantages in the context of wikipedia
Procedure (46-59 minutes)
the students will be asked about the benefits and drawbacks of cellphones. is it good for children or not? will they allow their children to have mobile phone or not?
in this stage, i will ask students to read the article without paying attention to the underlined vocabs. then they should answer these questions alone what was the article about? what are the 3 advantages of wikipedia? what are the 2 disadvantages? in general is the writer for or against wikipedia? after that i will check the answers with them.
now they should do part b and trying to correct the underlined vocabularies. then they check the answers in pairs. next, I will draw the layout of this writing on the board. I will describe that it contains 4 paragraphs: introduction, advantages, disadvantages, conclusion introduction: you should write a general thing about the topic and at the end you should mention it has some advantages and disadvantages as well. body1(advantages): here we should mention 2 or 3 benefits. you can write examples too. it's optional. or you can explain it with an example. we should start the sentence by "the first advantage/benefit of ... is... . second, ... . third, ... . body2(disadvantages): here again we can write 2 or 3 drawbacks. the paragraph starts with: On the other hand/ While/ However, it has/ there are some drawbacks/downsides. the rest is same as the previous paragraph. conclusion: in this part, you should conclude the whole essay. do not write about details. the paragraph starts with: In conclusion/ to conclude/ to sum up, ( paraphrase the 1st paragraph in brief). although the benefits of ... are useful/ anything, the downsides should not be ignored.
according to the exercise c, they are going to talk about advantages and disadvantages of smartphones in pairs and put them in the write column. then they go to exercise d, deciding which are the 3 biggest benefits and disadvantages and number them in pairs. now in part e they can write a writing alone with the given introduction. they can use the given box to help them.
now students should exchange their writings and try discuss about each other's writing. if there are any mistakes they can mention. at the end the writings will be collected and I will give some feedback. they should write the second essay at home, trying not to repeat the same mistakes that I corrected.
