Parents, family members and famous people's influence
intermediate B1 level


In this lesson, I will start the lead-in with a picture about a Turkish family to raise my learners' cultural awareness. I will ask students to draw their family pictures to talk about the most important person who has a great influence on them. After that, I will pre-teach them some vocabularies. Ss will then listen to people whose lives are influenced by important people and answer a question for the gist. Afterwards, they will listen for specific information. Listening activity will be followed by a task for detailed listening. I will provide my ss with 'useful language' to have speaking for that post-task.

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of famous people's influence


Lead-in/warmer (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T sticks some pictures of a famous Turkish series on the board to give ss new ideas to speak. Then, T asks them to draw their family pictures to activate interest and new ideas about the topic. T pre-teaches some important vocabularies for the listening by using gestures, miming and visuals.

gist listening (1 minutes) • To prepare students for the listening exercise and make it accessible

T gives ss a question with 3 alternatives for the gist and ss listen to CD and answer the question immediately. T nominates ss for FB.

Listening for Specific Information (10-15 minutes) • To provide ss with more challenging detailed task

T sticks the pictures of 4 people in the listening on the board and gives ss a handout to match different names with different people influencing them in their lives. T asks ss to come to the board and stick the right answer in front of the appropriate people for FB. T gives ss 4 sentences to find true and false ones and correct the false sentences. T asks ss to call each other's names for FB.

language focus (5-8 minutes) • To teach different usages of the word 'stuff'

T gives ss a handout including some sentences and asks them to answer the questions. Ss do it in pair. T has stuck the answers under their chairs for FB. T gives them another handout to re-write the sentences using the word 'stuff'. Ss do it in pair. T asks two ss to go outside the class and bring the answer key for FB.

Post-Listening (10-13 minutes) • To practice the target language

T provides ss with some useful phrases. Then, T gives ss 3 questions about important people's influence on their lives. T asks ss to do it in pair and use those phrases and and after that, share their ideas in group. T asks ss to call each other to ask the questions for FB.
