Description

In this lesson students talk about methods of communication and learn to express their opinions, they will listen to two conversations involving methods of communication and they will focus on the lexis and vocabulary such as - I'd say,I reckon, they say and etc. and at last they will discuss the context using the new lexis and expressions.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of expressing opinions vocabulary and lexis in the context of methods of communication

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice in a conversation and expressing opinions in the context of methods of communication
  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about expressing opinions in the context of me

Procedure

Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • warm up the students and prompt them to express their opinions and introduce the topic

write communication on the board clarify the meaning, before handing out the picture, show the pic clarify "keep in touch" and explain: " these are the different forms of communication or to keep in touch, take a look at them." students look at the picture, "now what are the people doing? (surfing the internet, talking on the skype/ skyping, sending a message, sending an email, tweeting etc) How do you keep in touch with your family and friends? discuss in pairs for 2 minute feedback as a class

Listening 1 (4 minutes) • Listening for the gist and main idea

unfold the page, look at these people we are going to listen to two conversations, between who? (Paula and Megan-Graham and Deniz ), which method of communication is each about? (write method of communication on wb) and what do people think about it?(write people think about it?) students listen ( write the words on the board) and then peer-check for 1-2 minutes and then feed-back by nominating

meaning clarification (3-4 minutes) • to clarify the meaning of the listening lexis and words

check the meaning of the written words

Listening 2 (5 minutes) • Listening for details

show the hand-outs "these are t/f questions from the listening, read them and answer t/f? you have 2 minutes" (write numbers and names on wb) listen again to check you answers peer-check give students the marker to write the answers

discussion, post-listening (if there was time complete if not an open discussion) (4-5 minutes) • check understanding/ freer practice

unfold the papers, in groups discuss these three questions for 3 minutes, check the questions: what did Paula and Megan think about social networking? do you agree? what are we doing? we are speaking) (listen to the discussions get some ideas and do an open feedback) how do you feel social networking? being in constant mobile contact with family and friends?

vocabulary/lexis clarification (10-12 minutes) • to clarify and review the vocab to express opinions

show the ex : please look at these sentences, in pairs try to remember who said these sentences? Paula/ Megan/Deniz or Graham? for example first...2 minutes in pairs please do the first part. write the expressions on the board, hand in the answer keys. clarify the meaning of expert,in pairs do the second part, which is about the highlighted parts that I have wrote them on the wb, which one...? you have 3 minutes. hand in the answer keys ,clarify the meaning on the wb, drill

speaking freer practice (10-12 minutes) • freer speaking practice using the newly learned expressions and lexis

stick the topics on the wb, draw their attention to the four topics, give an opinion or two and elicit one or two opinions, "now on a piece of paper write one sentence giving your opinion about each of these statements, you have 2/3 minutes." "in groups talk about these sentences together, do you have the same opinions? do you agree with each other? you have 4 minutes." monitor, make notes of problems for feedback. if time: summaries your group opinion on each topic.
