Description

In this lesson the students are going to listen to a few people experiencing the Murphy's Law in different circumstances.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide detailed listening practice using a text about different unexpected little mishaps in the context of Murphy's law

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in the context of talking about mishaps the students experienced in lives

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The students will be asked if they have ever experienced the Murphy's law (Something un/expected to go wrong did eventually go wrong). They should explain what the mishap was and they were doing when the un/expected thing happened.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The students will be informed about the meaning of the following vocabularies by providing a few images depicting the meaning of the words. recession - cut off(a phone call) - Optimistic vs Pessimistic

While-Reading/Listening #1 (2-3 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students will be asked to read the sentences 1 - 6 of Listening 8.13 on page 65, and then the audio file will be played. The students need to circle the words and phrases that they hear. They will have to check their answers when the students read their answer one by one.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Students will be asked to share their answers to Listening part b after the stories audio file is played and explain why they think each story was an example of the Murphy's law. Then, the students are asked to read the sentences of part c of the listening on page 65 and mark the sentences T or F after the audio is played again. They will need to support their ideas if they come up with different answers.

Post-Reading/Listening (3-4 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students will be asked to talk to each other in pairs about an unexpected little mishaps each experienced; what it was, how much unexpectedly it happened and what they were doing when it happened.
