Procedure (37-45 minutes)
Display photos typical everyday activities. Ask students, "What are some things you do every day?" Tell students today we will be learning different phrases using "day".
Tell students they will be reading a conversation between two friends. GIST reading task: 1. Share first G-form in chat. Explain to students that they must skim through the dialogue to get the GIST. After, their task is to answer five questions that ask about the general topics of conversation. Note that every answer option to each question uses a phrase with "day" to expose students to the phrases as much as possible. 2. Go over answers in OCFB. SPECIFIC INFORMATION reading task: 1. Share second G-form in chat. Explain to students that they must scan the text for 7 phrases with "day" and write the down. 2. Review answers in OCFB. Ask students CCQ: if "the other day" means recently in the past or a long time ago.
Teach students phrases with "day" using the MFP model. Meaning: 1. Show tree chart on G-slide. Explain to students that they must identify if each phrase is used to talk about the past, the future, how often/how long, or none of the above. Tell them they must drag each phrase to the appropriate column. Tell them "one day" can be applied twice. Make an example out of "the other day" by dragging it into the column for "the past". 2. Check answers in OCFB. Explain to them that "a day off" does not fit into the other categories because it is a compound noun, not an adverbial phrase used to refer to time. Form: 1. Show fill-in-the-blank activity on G-silde. There are seven sentences using the seven phrases. Explain to students that they must identify the correct article or adjective for each phrase. 3. Check answers in OCFB. Ask students if each phrase contains an article or an adjective. CCQ: Ask students what "day off" means to ensure they understand that "off" is an adjective used to describe "day" in the compound noun, but not in the literal sense of "off". Pronounciation: 1. Share link to G-form in the chat. Tell students they will listen to an audio of the prior sentences containing the phrases with "day". Tell students to identify the stressed words in each phrase is used in a sentence by selecting them on the G-form. Play the audio for students once. If time permits and students need, play audio one more time. 2. Have students check answers in pairs in breakout rooms. 3. Check answers in OCFB. Drilling: have students repeat saying each phrase.
1. Show fill-in-the-blank-activity on G-slide. Have students complete the sentences using the phrases in the phrase bank. 2. Review answers in OCFB. Have each student read the sentence out loud with the correct phrase. Ask CCQ for certain sentences: is the subject talking about the past, future, or how often/how long?
1. Show the questions on the G-slide. Tell students they must answer each question in a complete sentence using the related phrase with "day". 2. After students write down their answers, have them share in pairs in breakout rooms. 3. Regroup for OCFB. Provide DEC with certain sentences students have written.
