To enable students to greet people and introduce themselves using the present simple of be (I'm, you're, he's, she's)

Procedure (43-58 minutes)
Greet students individually. Put students in pairs introducing themselves and their friends using "Name chain".
Play audio Track 1.1 from the student book. Students match names and greetings. Ask comprehension questions : who says "Nice to meet you". "who is from Brazil?". Highlight expressions: Hi, Hello, Nice to meet you, What's your name?.
Focus on grammar: subject pronouns and the verb be (affirmative) Write chart on the board. Pronunciation focus: introduce word stress in names using English file system. Practice with listen and repeat.
Students complete a gap-fill activity using am/is/are. Check answers in pairs, then review as a class. Vocabulary: days of the week: put them in order Numbers 0-20: listen and repeat.
Provide students with a dialogue to complete with to be Practice in pairs. then ask them to write their own short conversation using real or imaginary information. Monitor for accuracy and help with pronunciation.
"Class mingle" speaking task: students move around and ask 3 - 4 classmates: "What's your name ","Where are you from?", "Are you a student?", "What's your favorite day of the week? " Encourage full answers. Wrap up with a few students reporting to the class.
