Hansel and Gretel

In this lesson,learners learn modifiers through guided discovery base on the story of Gretel and Hansel and pictures that adapted by T to clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of TL. After that, they have post-task activities (control practice and freer practice).

Warmer/lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engaged students

T sticks the names of the characters of the story such as Gretel and Hansel, the stepmother, the witch, the woodcutter to remind the Ss of the story they previously listened to. After that, T provides a game for Ss in which they match some adjectives with the characters. The Ss do it in two groups of red and blue. The one can finish it first with the correct answers is the winner. They will review the adjectives they have learned to use them with the modifiers in the following activities.

TL clarification (10-15 minutes) • to clarify meaning, form and pronunciation

T sticks pictures which show Istanbul in three different months to elicit modifiers meanings. T divides the board into four parts and gives examples of TL and elicits the part of speech of each word in those four parts on the board. T drills the sentences on the board and gives Ss substitution drills to clarify the pronunciation.

control practice (5-8 minutes) • to practice the TL in a controlled way

T gives Ss a handout to put some modifiers in the right place. They do it in pair,then check it together. T gives them the answer key. T gives Ss a gap-filling activity to fill the gaps of a short story with the modifiers they have learnt in the previous task. They do it individually, then they check in pair and after that they check with the whole class.

freer practice (10-15 minutes) • to practice TL in a freer way

T sticks some pictures of a fairy tale including a prince, princess, dragon, etc. on the board and elicit the meaning of the vocabularies. T starts the story and asks Ss to tell the rest of the story to each other by using some clues provided by teacher. Ss need to use the modifiers they have learnt.
