Description

A reading lesson to develop learners reading skills, interaction and understanding of languages and borrowed words.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To develop learners' reading skills, provide gist and have a good knowledge of language and borrowed words.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice and share their thoughts about the borrowed words from the passage

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To prepare learners for the topic ahead

I will ask my learners to discuss the following questions in pairs. What language do you speak? What words can you think of that your language has borrowed from English?

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-7 minutes) • To guide learners in the reading of the comprehension passage

I will ask the learners to read the passage. I will introduce the key vocabulary from the text to the learners. Example: a. Navigate b. Inventive c. Communal d. Foodies The examples of the borrowed words will be shown to the learners. Examples a. Canyon b. Colonial c. Hedonistic

While-Reading/Listening #1 (7-10 minutes) • To guide learners in the reading of the comprehension passage

Task 1: Vocabulary [MFP] a. The learners will read the text and identify the vocabulary. b. The learners will discuss the vocabulary under MFP. Task 2: Subheading and Reason The learners will suggest a suitable subheading for the passage and state the reason for the "answer" with evidence from the text.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

TEXT 2: The learners will read the text. Identify the borrowed words in the text. Talk about their Origin, Meaning and Usage.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they have learned

I will ask the learners the following questions to know how much they understood the lesson 1. Could you share your experience of speaking a foreign language for the first time. 2.Do you intend to learn more languages in future? why? Monitor and give feedback.
