Materials

Main Aims

  • Skills: Reading (and Listening?)

Subsidiary Aims

  • Vocabulary and speaking

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-5 minutes) • To get Ss interested in the topic which is generally about relationships and family disputes specifically.

T shows picture showing family arguments about leaving heating and lighting on but it is folded in a way that the reason is hidden. Ss work in pairs:look at picture and discuss who, where, what they are talking about. T asks Ss about what other reasons might cause family disputes: unfair division of household chores -different views on upbringing of children-money-problems with other family members-spending too little time with family

While-Reading/Listening #1 (7-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T shows the handout (p.21 of coursebook) that he is going to distribute pointing at the circle and asking Ss to read it very quickly in about one minute then turn over the page and summarizing the content in one sentence or getting the main idea. Ss give feedback.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (12-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

T shows the next handout (p.20 of coursebook) ex.3 asking Ss to first read the text,White Teeth, on p.21 then decide if the sentences are T or F or if the text does not say D. If it is T,Ss have to point to the statement in the text.If it is F, then Ss have to correct it. T checks understanding of the words.

Post-Reading/Listening (10-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

-T sets the task which will be a debate between two teams ,each team has to stand up for the opposite viewpoints in the text. Ss work in two groups in two separate areas in class, five minutes for agreeing on their ideas then the debate starts. T monitors and notes down any errors. T elicits and gives feedback. -2nd option is to practice speaking by ``back to the board ``activity in which I call a volunteer from different groups asking them to sit with their back to the board facing the class. Each group should explain the word that I write on board and the volunteer should guess the word. The team whose volunteer knows the word first will get a point. Mary is a casual (acquaintance )of my family. My (stepbrother) and I get on well . My (half-brother) and I have a lot in common. There has always been (sibling) rivalry between brother and sister. My young (nephew) is very cute. My old (niece) is very beautiful.
