TP2 Lesson Plan
Elementary level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
Perhaps the most important element of any plan is the part where we say what our aims are.Jeremy Harmer in The Practice of English Language Teaching
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide clarification and practice of Daily life in the context of Home, work, school, eating, shops
Procedure (30-33 minutes)
I will present my first slide, on this slide there will be several photos of very "British" things. Ex: tea, British food, British school,Harry Potter, pub, etc. I will ask my Ss to describe what they see in the photos and try to guess what the lesson might be about. After they guess, I will ask them several questions for engagement. Ex: Do you know these movies? Have you had English breakfast tea? Have you ever gone to a British style pub?
I will present a slide with 6 challenging words from the reading. These 6 words will have 6 photos. They Ss will need to match the photo to the word. This will provide clarity on what the challenging word means (meaning). The Ss will have 3 minutes to do this matching vocab task in pairs in breakout rooms. There will be several copies of the slides, and each pair group will be assigned a slide (ex: slide 3, slide 4, etc). I will ask ICQs before they start: How many minutes do you have? What is the task you're doing? When they return from breakout rooms I will randomly select a S to share their answer for each question and correct as needed. I will then ask Ss what these words have in common to elicit their correct part of speech (form). This might be easy, as all 6 words I'm using are nouns. Next, we will VERY quickly drill how to say them (pronunciation). Before moving on, I will ask a few CCQs: Does a "flat" mean a large house? Is a pub a place to have drinks? Do you buy clothes at a supermarket?
I will introduce the text to the Ss without the title/sub headings. They will be purposefully left out. I will tell my students first what they will have to do after the reading: they will need to create a title/subtitles for the text. They just need to read the text quickly to get a general understanding. To ensure they read quickly, I will tell them they have one minute to read the text. I will leave the text on my screen and just have them read it there. After they've read, I will tell them to create a fitting title for the entire text. Then, I will ask them to create fitting subtitles for each sections based on their main idea. They will do so on a google document. Ss will have 2 minutes to do so individually. They will be given the link to a google doc to record their answers. ICQs: How much time do you have? Are you only creating a title? When time is up, I will randomly select a Ss to share their answer. I will be sharing my screen and will use each Ss answer to fill in the blanked out title/sub headers. After this, I will show what the textbook title/subtitles say. We can quickly compare their answers to the textbook together.
I will show the Ss the questions I've created on GoogleForms. I will ask a different S to read out each question. After, I will tell the Ss to read the text carefully this time so they can find the answer to each question. They will have 3 minutes to read. After they read for detail, they will have 3 minutes in breakout rooms to answer questions in pairs. They must discuss with their partner why they think this is the correct answer (justify). ICQs: Do you have 10 mins to do this? What are you doing? When returning from breakout rooms, I will select Ss to share their answer. They must explain why they've chosen that answer. We will correct as a class.
I will ask the Ss to discuss in pairs: What is life like in your country? Ask your partner 3 questions about their daily life. You have 2 minutes. While they are talking, I will observe their answers and write some of their answers on an empty slide. When Ss return we will look over some of their answers/ likely do some correction when needed. This will also be time for delayed error correction based on any other frequent mistakes I noted during our lesson.
