Soroush Seyedpiran Soroush Seyedpiran

AFL starter 3rd edition 1A
Elementary, A1 level

Description

In this 80-minute session, I’m going to help my beginner students learn how to introduce themselves, ask for names, talk about days of the week, and use basic numbers in English. I’ll start with a simple icebreaker where I introduce myself and encourage each student to do the same. Then, I’ll play a listening activity from the book and guide them to repeat and role-play the conversation in pairs. I’ll teach the grammar of the verb be (am/is/are), including contractions, using the board and gestures to make it clear. After that, I’ll teach numbers and word stress, and we’ll do some fun counting and simple math practice together. I’ll also introduce the days of the week and explain cultural differences like the weekend in the Middle East versus the West. Toward the end, I’ll encourage students to walk around the room, practice introductions, and ask each other what day it is. My goal is to make the session interactive, supportive, and focused on building their basic speaking and listening skills.

Main Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a Introduction in the context of Conversa

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of To be: I / you in the context of Introduct

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (9-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will start by introducing myself: “Hello, my name is Soroush Seyedpiran. I am your English teacher.” I will write this on the board. Then, I’ll point to a student and say, “Hello, I’m Soroush. What’s your name?” When the student answers, I’ll respond, “Nice to meet you, (name).” I will repeat this with each student to build rapport and set the tone. Then, I’ll hold up the book, show the students how to open it, and ask them to go to page 6.

Exposure (14-15 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will play audio 1.3 from the book while students listen and follow along. I’ll show them a picture of a barista to clarify the vocabulary. Then I’ll play the audio again and tell them to repeat after the recording. I’ll demonstrate the meaning of “repeat” using gestures. After choral repetition, I’ll choose two students—one will be Helen and Barista 1, the other will take the remaining roles. Once they practice, I’ll tell everyone to do the same in pairs and model the meaning of “pair” by showing them.

Highlighting and Clarification (19-20 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Grammar (Be verb): I will ask students to do task 2a on page 6. Then, I’ll go to page 92 (Grammar Bank) and play audios 1.4 and 1.5 for students to repeat. I’ll write positive, negative, and question forms of be on the board and use gestures to show how questions change the word order. I will teach contractions like I’m, you’re, you aren’t, you’re not and explain that I is always capital. We will practice task 1A in pairs. I will then play audio 1.6 for more practice with contractions. Vocabulary (Numbers): I will play audio 1.7 for students to check the correct photo, then go to page 116 and play audio 1.8 for number pronunciation practice. I will point at my lips and tongue to help with tricky sounds and highlight word stress by underlining syllables. After that, I’ll ask students to count around the class forwards and backwards and then do 1.9 and 1.10 for listening and simple math practice.

Controlled Practice (14-15 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I will use the chart on page 7 and practice one side with one student, then the other side with a different student (pretending I don’t know their name). After that, students will practice the chart in pairs. I’ll write the conversation on the board to support them, then tell them to close their books and practice again. Days of the Week: I will play audio 1.13 and ask students to repeat the days of the week. I will remind them that we use capital letters for days. I’ll explain how the weekend is different in the Middle East compared to Western countries. Then, I’ll teach today and tomorrow and guide students through tasks b and c on page 7. Finally, I’ll play audio 1.14 and practice goodbye phrases using gestures, and show students they can find more examples on page 131.

Free Practice (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will ask students to stand up, walk around, and practice real introductions with each other. They’ll say: - “Hello, I’m (name). What’s your name?” - “Nice to meet you.” - “What day is it today?” I’ll monitor the class, help students if needed, and finish by praising their effort.
