Listening Comprehension

Description

In this lesson the students are going to listen to 2 people talking about their phobias and how they've affected their lives.

Materials

Abc SB, track 33

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, specific information and detailed listening practice using a text about Phobia in the context of Phobia

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Conversation in the context of Different kinds of phobias

Procedure

Warmer (3-5 minutes) • To set context and engage ss

Ss are shown some pics about phobias and will be asked if they have a phobia or not. If yes, what kind of phobia? If no, do they know someone with a phobia?

Pre-listening (5 minutes) • To prepare ss for the listening

The ss will be informed about new words used in the listening. terrified (adj) frightened(adj) affect(v) refuse to (v) rational, irrational (adj)

While-listening #1 (5 minutes) • To provide ss with a gist and less challenging specific information about the listening

The ss will listen to track and answer following qs: 1. What is she afraid of? 2. How long has she had the phobia? 3. What does she think started it? 4. How does/did it affect her life? 5. Has she had any therapy? The answers will be checked with WC. Ss will need to support their ideas if they come up with different answers.

While-listening #2 (5 minutes) • To provide ss with more challenging detailed, deduction, inference listening task

Ss will read the qs in part b, listen to track again and answer the qs: 1. What do you find out about their therapy or why they didn't have therapy? 2. Are their phobias better now?

Post-listening (7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the listening and expand on what they've learned

Ss will be asked to talk to each other in groups of 3. (Part C) Which of the phobias in this lesson do you think is the most rational/ irrational? Why?
