Making recommendations

Description

In this lesson, ss will learn about how to make recommendations and how to respond when someone recommends something for them.

Procedure

Lead in (6-8 minutes) • to lead the ss in the lesson and to build up a context.

I will tell ss that one of my friends wants to visit Istanbul and she is not sure where to stay. Which place do you recommend (you think it is the best) for her to stay in a hotel or someone's home (an apartment or a house)? Some would say a hotel while the others will say an apartment. I will divide the class into 2 groups. I will ask group to recommend a place explaining why. I will monitor to provide any help if necessary. I will present the word "recommendation". I will ask each group about its recommendation. Then, I will ask one group to write about the advantages and disadvantages of staying in a hotel and the other to write about the advantages and disadvantages of staying in someone's home . Ss will write down their answers. I will monitor to check if ss are on the right track or not and to provide any help if necessary. Then , ss from different groups will sit together to complete the rest of the task

I will ask ss to look at the pictures . I will ask them "What do you think the people in the pictures want to know? I will divide the ss into pairs . I will ask them to try to guess and I will listen to their predictions. I will ask ss to listen to the CD and find out if their predictions are right or wrong . I will monitor . I will ask ss to check answers. I will get the answers from ss.

Listening for specific information . (4-6 minutes) • To get more information about the listening exercise

I will give ss an exercise about the two conversations. I will ask them to listen and to tick the three things each speaker recommends . Ss will listen to the CD. I will monitor. Ss will check answers in pairs. I will check the answers with ss.

post-listening exercise. (7-9 minutes) • To help ss focus of the different language expressions used to make recommendations.

I will give ss an exercise and I will ask them to underline the phrases used in the conversations to make recommendations. I will monitor . I will ask ss to check answers in pairs. I will get the answers from ss. I will write these answers on board. I will drill the new phrases and expressions with ss.

Listening for specific information (4-6 minutes) • To get a specfic information from the listening exercise.

I will ss to listen again and ask them " How do the visitors reply to the recommendations?" I will ask ss to tick the phrases the visitors used. I will monitor . I will ask ss to check answers in pairs. I will get the answers from ss. I will write the answers on board and drill them with ss.

Speaking activity (7-9 minutes) • To give ss practice in speaking for the target language.

I will ask the class into pairs. One will be a business visitor to Istanbul and the other will be a local resident . A will ask B "Excuse me, I 'm new in this city. Can you recommend anything to see nearby?" B will take his time to answer the questions using the new phrases he has already been taught and then they change roles. We may shuffle the pairs once more for more practice.

A Filler (3-5 minutes) • to use this exercise as a filler

If there is any time left, I will ask ss to complete a magazine article about Istanbul using the target langauae
