Description

In this lesson students will practice telling a story to each other in the context of having unexpected events during a holiday. Students will practice predicting a story and telling their stories to each other.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in telling a story using adverbs in the context of unexpected events during a holiday.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about an unexpected event in the context of having a holiday.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Say Ss the that the lesson is a true personal story. Something happened when I went on a holiday and you want to share with them. Clarify the word Holiday. Ask SS for a synonym for the word holiday. Ask them if they think my story is about a celebration or a vacation. Show ppt with images and have students think what is the relation between pictures in pairs.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Tell students you will give them keywords of your story and they should try to think how the storyline is and put the keywords in order. I start telling the story.Ss listen and correct their answers.

Highlighting (2-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Ss complete the second half of the paper, matching exercise.Check answers together as a pair.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Clarify words from the story like adverbs and collocations.write them on the board. Use CCQs to elicit meaning. Highlight stress and drill pronunciation.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ask students to try to retell each the story using keywords and words from the board. They should talk through the story with each other.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Tell students to think of their own stories about unexpected events in a holiday. They might be good events or bad events. They should write down 5 or 7 keywords for their story. Ask me for vocabulary if you need help to write keywords. Monitor and write down language Ss use incorrectly. Write them on the board and correct one with the help of students. Have the whole class correcting written vocabulary. Elicit correct form with the help of Ss.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss tell each other their stories. Monitor and take notes. Write incorrect vocabulary on the board. Ask for meaning. Use CCQS to make SS understand. If time have Ss retell their stories to other partners using correct language.
