Past Perfect
Elementary level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide clarification of Past Perfect in the context of Day to day Actions
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide accuracy speaking practice in a Conversation (statement) in the context of Day to day Actions
Procedure (34-44 minutes)
In this section I will start the class by talking about a couple of things that had happened by the time I got to class today (and of course involving sentences with Past Perfect form). Then I will ask the students to talk about things that had already happened by the time they got to class today.
In this section I will write some of the answers that students gave me in the correct form on the WB to draw their attention to the TL and Past Perfect Grammar.
In this section I will clarify the meaning of the grammar by drawing a timeline and asking some CCQs. (are the sentences about the past, present or the future? past - are both actions finished? yes - which sentence (action) happened earlier? first Past perfect, then past simple). Then I will elicit the structure from the students so they understand how to form the sentences. Then the form of the past perfect for each person would be clarified (same for all). Some hard, irregular past participle could be drilled in the class. Then the contraction of had to 'd will be clarified and I will aware them of situations that 'd can be "would" and not "had".
In this section, the students are going to do exercise 12A, b on page 149 in 5 minutes, then they will have 3 minutes to check their answers in pairs and at the end we will check the answers with the whole class. I will ask some ICQs to make sure they understood my instructions.
I will ask the students to make up the craziest excuses for being late to class (in the Past Perfect form of course) and then they can discuss who had the craziest excuse amongst them!
