Past continues in the context of describing pictures
Intermediate level

Description

The lesson starts with a discussion about a picture showing multiple actions happening at the same time. The teacher tells a short story based on the image, using the past continuous tense. Students then describe the actions in the picture using their own sentences. The teacher elicits the structure (was/were + verb-ing) from the students and writes it on the board. After practicing with controlled exercises, students complete a freer task: describing a scene from a film or a personal memory using the past continuous.

Materials

Show a picture with multiple simultaneous actions (e.g., a busy park). Ask students simple questions: “What do you see?”, “What is happening in the picture?”

Exposure (3-4 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Tell a short story using the image. Example: “Yesterday at 5 p.m., the children were playing football. The old man was feeding birds...” Students listen and follow.

After the storytelling, the teacher elicits key sentences from the students and highlights the grammatical structure

I will clarify the meaning of the past continuous by drawing a timeline and asking CCQs such as: “Is it in the past?” (Yes) “Was the action finished?” (No) “Can I use a time like ‘at 6 p.m.’?” (Yes). Then I will elicit the form from students (was/were + verb-ing) using example sentences.Subject-verb agreement and the -ing form will be highlighted.Difficult forms will be drilled if needed (e.g., “was watching,” “were playing”).

Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The students will do exercise A on page 132 in the grammar bank in 3 minutes. Students will be given 3 minutes to check their answers in their groups . Then the answers will be checked in the whole class.
