pre-intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students will learn and practice the second conditional to talk about imaginary or unreal situations in the present or future. The lesson begins with a short discussion about hypothetical situations to activate interest and introduce the target structure. Students are then guided through the form and meaning of the second conditional using examples from the textbook (AEF2 Unit 9A). Controlled activities allow students to practice forming second conditional sentences, followed by a freer speaking activity where they use the structure in personal and creative ways. The lesson also introduces “If I were you…” as a common way of giving advice

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of conversation in the context of Daily life

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of Daily life

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To engage students in the topic, persolize the context and create a reason to learn the new structure.

I ask students simple, relatable questions to spark curiosity: "If you didn't have to work or study tomorrow, what would you do?" Students give short answers.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To exposure students to the target structure in context and help them begin to notice meaning and form befor explicit clarification

I write 3 project in second conditional in a daily context: 'If I had more time, I'd travel more", :" If I were rich, I'd buy a big house", " If I didn't live in this city, I'd live near the sea". Then I read them aloud and ask them what would they do in these situations.

Highlighting (1-2 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will write their sentences to capture their attentions and prepare their mind for the new structure

Clarification (4-5 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I write the form on the board: " If + past simple, would + base verb". Then I write examples in correct form. I point out that "was" will change to "were". I talk about the contraction: I would= I'd. Negative form : I would not or I wouldn't.

Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

students do exercise A and B on page 143: Matchings and filling the blanks
