In this lesson, students learn to form third person questions and answers related to origins, names, cities, and countries.

Materials

Abc Printout of map and 8 faces
Abc Picture of man(x7), picture of other man (x7), picture of woman (x7), picture of other woman (x7)

Main Aims

  • To practice language used for forming questions and answers in the context of nationality, origin, name

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of contractions in the context of where is, what is, it is
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in pronunciation of `s` as either /z/ or /s/ in the context of where´s, what´s, it´s

Procedure

Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • to introduce myself

Write on board: What´s my name? Have students answer Write on board: Where am I from? Have students guess

Map game (5-10 minutes) • to review third person answers in the context of origin and names

Hand out copies from of map from page 13 of New Headway Beginner. Have students work individually on filling out the map. Play recording Track 19 from NHB CD to help students check their answers.

Elicit and drill name and origin (3-5 minutes) • to review third person questions and contractions

Put two pictures (1 man, 1 woman). Elicit ´what´s her/his name´ and ´where´s s/he from´ Drill on board with corresponding contractions.

Questions and answers pair work (5-10 minutes) • to have students practice third person questions and answers

Divide students into pairs: a-b, a-b, a-b, a-(T). give As picture of black woman (Sally from South Africa) and white guy (Tim from Scotland). give Bs picture of white woman (Becca from Italy) and asian man (Carl from Japan). Have them practice asking and answering in with their partners

Elicit and drill city and country (1-2 minutes) • to get students comfortable with the vocab city and country

Right on board ´Istanbul´ and ´Turkey.´ ask: what´s Istanbul? what´s Turkey?

Group work! Cities and country (5-10 minutes) • to get students practicing: where´s? it´s in

Put two desks together in the middle of the room. Divide the class into two groups. Give one 3/4 (depending on group size) cities and 3/4 countries. Demonstrate: where´s Barcelona? it´s in Spain. Have students from first group put down one city at a time and ask: where´s? other student put down matching country by saying: it´s in

Fill in the blank - faces and places • make sure the every single student can form name and origin questions

Handout print out from NHB pages 14-15, 140-141. Demonstrate by asking student: What´s her name?´ ´Where´s she from? for #1. Have each student ask for one picture while the whole class writes down the name and origin of the person in the picture.

Flex activity: Presentations (10-15 minutes) • make sure every student can answer questions related to origin and name

Hand each student an empty scrap paper. Ask them to draw someone. Have each student come up and answer: what´s her/his name? where´s s/he from?
