Description

This lesson focusses on reading for gist and detail.Teacher introduces the topic using a picture and some words that students might not know.Students will be expected to read the article and guess the meaning of highlighted words from the context. Students will match the words with their correct meaning. Students will be encouraged to use the learnt words to answers questions about the article.Discussion questions about the context of interviews will be answered by groups.

  • Fluency practice in the context of a job interview.

Procedure

Warmer (5-7 minutes) • To introduce the topic and illustrate the meanings of some words

Students will be introduced to the topic by asking questions about the picture. The words of "interviewer" and " interviewee" will be covered. The words will be written under the relevant parts of the picture. Two questions in exercise a will be asked to students.

Pre-teach vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • To help students understand the text easily

Teacher quickly introduces a few items which Ss would need to understand the text. The words will be written on the board.

Reading for gist (5-7 minutes) • To read for overall understanding

Ss should read the article and ascertain the actual answer to the second question in the warmer to check overall understanding.

Reading for detail (15-19 minutes) • To guess meaning from the context and use learnt words

Teacher will draw attention to the highlighted words in the text. Teacher will demonstrate how to guess meaning from the context for one or two items and then Ss will guess the rest in pairs. Exercise d will be done individually and then answers will be checked in pairs. Correct answers will be written on the board. The questions in exercise f will be answered in groups. The answers will be written by using the target vocabulary. Each group will say the answers.

Discussion and Evaluation (4-7 minutes) • To give a change to evaluate the idea stated in the article

Students will discuss the questions in exercise g and evaluate if the questions would work well in a real situation.Each group will talk about the most and the least useful questions and share their thoughts with the class.
