Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about a homeless man and a nurse.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion about Sheila and Akan's relationship

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher asks the questions below to engage the students in the lesson; -Are there any beggars and homeless people in your town/where you live? -Do you ever give money to them? Why or why not? -Who do you think should be responsible for helping them?

Pre-Reading Vocabulary (4-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T gives a handout on which are some key vocabulary from the text, and asks the Ss match the words with their definitions. When they are done, Ss check in pairs first, then T gives the answerkey.

While-Reading Gist Reading (2-3 minutes) • To provide students with a less challenging gist task

T hands out the text that they will work on, but there are few sentences taken out and written seperately under the text. T gives Ss two minutes to put the sentences into the correct places in the text. Finally, T gives the answerkey.

While-Reading Reading for Details (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading

Ss read some sentences about the text and correct the false information in the text. When they are done, first they check their answers in pairs, finally T gives the answerkey.

Guessing (2-4 minutes) • To talk about their guesses

First, Ss guess about the end of the story in pairs or groups. Next, T gets some of the answers and gives them the rest of the story to read and check. Finally, T asks if any of their guesses were correct or not.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss discuss the questios below; -Do you think that Sheila and Akan's relationship will last? -What kind of problems do you think they will face in the future?
