Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of using the internet.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about social networking in the context of lasting friendships.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Greet the class and start a little daily talk with members whom have arrived. Write some of the social networking sites names on the board, and ask who uses which for what reason. I want you to pick one piece of paper and unfold your papers, but do not read aloud. Ask Ss to find someone matching the description, and sit with them. Nominate couple of pairs and ask if they will add each other on facebook, why and why not.

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Have the Ss seated at their choice of places, pair the Ss in 2's or in groups. Ask Ss to read ex. 1 and answer the Q's in pairs or groups * Whilst handing out the paper, ask what will we look at? Ex 1 * Are you going to answer them in groups? Ex 1 Hand out the papers and ask to fold to avoid distraction. Ss will carry out the activity in groups, they will be asked to check with their peers and encourage them to help each other - Monitoring and noting errors (pronunciation or grammar). Feedback will be carried out asking Q's and groups answering by sharing the the answers, errors will be picked up and corrected. Elicit socializing, what do I do when I talk to my friends? Socialize. Check the meaning of socializing - when do you socialize? DRILL and WRITE. 2a. Think about the title, and look at Q 2 again, come up with ideas in pairs please. Nominate a pair for feedback.

While-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

2b. Ask Ss to read the article below individually, then with the same pairs ask Ss to check if the article mentions their ideas from 2a. ICQ Are you reading together? NO CCQ Can you make friends on social networks?Yes but...

While-Reading for detail (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

3. Write down, who is DR Tyagi? on the board. Await an answer from a strong S. Ask Ss if they can see the numbers 1-5 in the article. Ask what they are? Views. Ask Ss to look at the Qs on ex 3 and read to find the answers. Lets do the first one together. 'Where does it say that, young people have an unrealistic view of the world'? Then ask what reasons he gives. Ask the Ss to carry on in pairs. Monitor closely, correct errors. Ask for feedback.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

4. Ask Ss to look at Ex 4 and talk to each other about the Q's in pairs. ICQ Are you going to talk to each other about the Q's? Monitor their conversations and join in to correct. Ask for feedback with Q's below: Did anyone strongly disagree with the article? WHY? Nominate Ss and ask the Q's 2 & 3. On the board write down BENEFITS and brainstorm the benefits of using the internet from the article. Ask Ss to come up with own benefits. If there is enough time, language that was used incorrectly will be corrected via drilling.
