Description

In this lesson, Ss read about an adult who lives with his parents. Initial and detailed reading tasks enable them to understand the text better.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To give Ss practice in reading for gist, specific information and detail in the context of adults living at home

Subsidiary Aims

  • To enable Ss to gain speaking skills by using present simple tense in the context of adults living at home
  • To enable Ss to review family vocabulary

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (6-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Draw a family tree on the board and mention your family by using their ages. Elicit vocabulary. CCQs; How old am I? Do I live with my parents? Why? How old are people when they leave the family home? How old are people when they get married? Ss work in pairs and ask each other their age and whether they live with their family or not.

Pre-Reading/Listening (2-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ask Ss to look at the photo and ask them: How old is he?

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

After Ss read the text, ask "What's the problem?"

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Tell Ss to underline the correct words after they read the text again. Demonstrate the task.

Post-Reading/Listening (12-14 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss ask each other "Do you know someone like Andy?, Do you live with your parents?" in pairs. Feedback. T asks Ss "What do you think of the situation?, Why does Andy live with his parents?"
