Procedure (69-89 minutes)
Have SS look at ex 1A on p 24 and discuss the questions in pairs. Get a whole class feedback.
Put SS into groups and assign them Student A and Student B roles. Student A reads card 1 in Ex 6B. Student B reads card 2 in Ex 6D. Give students 6 minutes to write a short dialogue based on the cards. Monitor and help with vocabulary if necessary. After the role-play, point out any common mistakes. Encourage SS to self-correct.
Have SS read the instructions of ex 1B, p 24. Tell SS to choose the topics they think the two speakers are going to discuss and write down their notes.
Have SS listen to the recording in Ex 1B, p 24. Tell them to check if their predictions were correct. Then have SS listen again to the same recording in Exercise 1C. Ask SS to check their answers in pairs. Then elicit the answers from different students.
Instruct SS to work in pairs to ask and answer the questions in ex 1D, p 24. Monitor them closely while they speak. Provide a whole class feedback.
Tell the class they are going to read two posts from Lucia’s travel blog. Elicit what they think she might write about. Then have SS look at the list of topics in ex 2A on p 24.
Give SS 5 minutes to read the text called “My trip to OZ” on page 25. Then have them return to ex 2A on p 24 to check their answers. Elicit the answers from SS and ask them to justify their choices by referring to specific parts of the text.
Tell SS to read the blog posts again to answer the questions in Ex 2B on page 24. Tell them to pair-check their answers before sharing the answer key. Provide a whole class feedback.
Ask SS follow-up comprehension questions such as: “What was the first blog about? Where did she mention the Royal Botanic Garden?” Elicit responses from different students. Elicit key vocabulary from the text and clarify the meaning of any unfamiliar words if necessary.
Give SS 5 minutes to complete the exercises 3A and 3B individually. Have SS pair check and compare answers. Tell SS to close their books. Elicit some of the linking words they remember from the text and write them on the board. Then ask guiding questions such as: “Which of these are used to show contrast?”, “Which ones give a reason?” Clarify the meaning of these linking words if any students are unsure.
Tell SS to do Ex 3C on p 25, where they fill in the gaps with linking words. Elicit the answers from the class. Provide a whole class feedback.
Tell SS they are going to write a blog post. Have them choose one of the topics provided in Ex 4A, on p 25. In Ex 4B, give SS 2 minutes to make notes and think about key details such as where they were and how they felt. Before they begin writing, tell them to use some of the linking words from Ex 3A on p 25. In Ex 4C, give them 8 minutes to write their blog post. Monitor closely and support with vocabulary as needed. In Ex 4D, put SS into pairs. Tell them to read their partner’s blog post, identify the linking words used, and answer the question in 4D. Conduct a whole class feedback.
Ask SS reflective questions such as “Did you learn any new vocabulary or expressions today? If so, which ones?” or “What would you change if you rewrote your blog post?
