  • To provide product writing practice of a short diary entry in the context of living in Antarctica
  • To provide gist reading practice asking about facts about Antarctica by using Mentimeter
  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about working in Antarctica by asking True/False questions.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of key words of the text (chef manager, environmentally friendly, climate change, fragile environment) in the context of Antarctica

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Warm-Up: T greets the students and shows them a picture. T asks Ss to guess the place in the picture. Lead-in: T asks Ss to scan the QR code, go to Mentimeter, and answer the questions about Antarctica.

Pre-Reading (Pre-Vocabulary Teaching, Gist Task) (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Pre-Vocabulary Teaching: T gives the definition of the unknown vocabulary items (chef manager, environmentally friendly, climate change, fragile environment) by using them in meaningful sentences. Then, T gives Ss a matching activity about the vocabulary items and asks them to match the vocabulary items with their definitions. Gist Task: T asks Ss to look at the job advertisement and answer the questions on the board.

While-Reading #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T asks Ss to read the text in their coursebook and answer three questions on the board. Then, T checks the answers to the questions with the whole class.

While-Reading #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

T gives Ss a True/False activity. T asks Ss to read the text again for detailed information and decide on each statement if it is true or false. Then T asks Ss to be pairs or groups (depending on the number of students) and discuss their answers with their pairs or groups. Finally, T checks the answers with the whole class.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Post Reading(8-9 minutes): T asks Ss to scan the QR code and open the Padlet. T asks Ss to write a short diary entry (5-6 sentences) as if they are living in Antarctica on the Padlet. Then, T asks Ss to share their diaries with the whole class. Wrap-up (1 minute): T says, “Today, we have read a text about working in Antarctica and done activities about the text. Thank you for your contributions. See you!”
