Show the pictures of a city (Hull) and a small town (Brough). Ask SS to describe them using basic adjectives (e.g.,big, small, nice, old). Ask SS to work in pairs and talk about where they live. Have SS to ask some questions with one another: "Do you live near your job or school?" "What places are near your home?" (park, supermarket, hotel) "Do you like your town? Why or why not?"
Ask SS to look at pictures of a park, supermarket, hotel, office, and receptionist. Have SS to match the pictures with given those words. Ask SS to give examples of similar places in their own town or city. Have SS to use the new words in short personal sentences
Ask SS to look at the title and predict who Mark is and where he lives. SS to discuss in pairs what life might be like in a big city and a small town. Have SS to think about what jobs people do in a city and what places are important in a town. SS to share their ideas with the class. Open class feedback.
Ask SS to read the text quickly for general understanding. Have SS to choose the correct summary from the multiple-choice options (A-D). Ask SS to compare their answers in pairs and explain their choice. Monitor and notes any misunderstandings, if needed.
Ask SS to read the text again and answer the comprehension questions individually by choosing "Yes, it's" or "No, it isn't". Ask SS to underline parts of the text that helped them choose each answer. Have SS to compare their answers in pairs before having a whole class feedback. Elicit some correcting for Yes/No answers while conducting a feedback.
Ask SS to look at the text and find how many paragraphs it has. Have SS to identify the main idea of each paragraph. Ask SS to label each paragraph with a short heading like, e.g., "About Hull", "Job", "Home in Brough". Ask SS to work in pairs and to talk to each other about their locations and places
Ask SS to answer the five questions (like a writing frame or outline). Then, to work in pairs to compare answers and get peer ideas. Elicit synonyms or opposites on the board as needed (e.g., park, supermarket, new, quiet, town, village, city, interesting and etc)
Have SS to write a short paragraph (5-6 sentences) about their home using their answers. Encourage them to connect ideas and check for word order.
Ask SS to use the checklist to assess their answers. As a class identify strong features and highlight them on the board. Invite some SS to reflect on what was easy and what was difficult for them.
