Subsidiary Aims

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will start the class by telling my students about how I spent my last weekend and then I am going to ask them to tell me about their weekend and the things they did.

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will write some of the sentences that my students made in the correct past simple form on the board to draw their attention to the TL.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will draw a timeline on the board and I will ask some CCQs from my students to clarify the meaning. 1. Are these sentences about the past, present or future? (past). Are the actions finished? (Yes). Can I mention the exact time that they happened? (Yes). I will tell my students that there are some regular and irregular verbs....

Controlled Practice (10-12 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students are going to do exercise 1a on page 120 in 4 minutes individually. Then I will give them 2 minutes to check their answers in pairs and then we will check the answers with the whole class.

Free Practice (11-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will ask my students to talk about their best holiday ever in 8 minutes in groups of 4. They will be monitored and feedback will be given at the end.
