Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of second conditionals in the context of risks and unlikely situations.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of risks and unlikely situations.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows visuals of risks and unlikely situations and Ss predict the context. T asks a few Ss questions if they'd do what is in the visuals to introduce and generate use of TL.

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T models task in Quiz HO and distributes it. Ss attempt quiz individually. T nominates Ss to share their answers. ICQs: Will you choose what you will do? [Yes] Will you work together or individually? [Individually] How much time do you have? [3 minutes]

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T writes one or two marker sentences on board and elicits subject and verb in each clause. T puts complement elements in parentheses to show Ss which verb to focus on in clarification.

Clarification (8-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T explains and models first task in Guided Discovery HO. Ss attempt first task in pairs. T monitors and assists Ss as required. ICQs: Will you look at A and B? [yes] Will you look at the 2nd sentence? [No] Working alone or in pairs? [In pairs] WCFB T explains and models second task. Ss attempt task in groups. Will you look at C and D [Yes] Will you work in pairs or groups? [Groups] T distributes answer key and drills pronunciation of marker sentences on WB.

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To check that Ss use the correct tense form in the if-clause

T models task in controlled practice HO and explains that the questions are different for different colored HOs. T distributes Controlled Practice HO dividing class in two groups based on HO color. Ss attempt task in pairs. T pastes answer keys on two sides of the class. Ss check answers. Delayed error correction on common points in both HOs.

Speaking Practice (8-10 minutes) • To use TL in fluency speaking practice in pairs

T pairs a set of Ss (one from each group) to model task using Controlled Practice HO. T says Ss must find out who had the most interesting answer(s). Ss mingle with people from other group and practice speaking. ICQs: Will you speak to someone who has the same color or different color HO? [different] Will you only ask questions? [No] Will you answer your partner's questions? [Yes] DELAYED ERROR CORRECTION Check: Form: use of past simple tense for verb in if-clause, use of would/wouldn't in main clause, missing articles, etc. Pronunciation: Using contracted form of would, intonation, other pronunciation errors.

If-time activity: President of the world (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with freer fluency speaking practice using TL

T explains that Ss need to think of what they would do if they were the president of the world. T models task through personal example. T explains that S with the best idea becomes president. Ss talk in groups. WCFB on who had the best idea. T hands over flag to nominated S. Delayed error correction on MPF.
