Copy of Speaking Lesson Plan
Elementary (A1) level

Description

In this lesson students continue to learn the same context as they are given some of the vocabulary and TL from the previous lesson. Ss also personalize the context and TL through productive skills or speaking, listening and writing by using a dictogloss activity.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of houseswap

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give Ss practice in listening, writing and using new vocabulary

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (6-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Tell Ss to close their eyes and imagine their perfect home. Say: Where is it? How big is it? Is it a flat or a house? Is it close to the city centre? Is it far from the shops? Is it lovely? Tell Ss to open their eyes and write their names and a short description of their perfect house on a piece of paper. Tell them to think about the language from the previous lesson (house-swap)

Exposure (11-13 minutes) • To provide Ss focus on target language and develop fluency.

Ask Ss to stand up and walk round the class, speak to at least 4 people. Ask Ss to tell other Ss in the class about their homes, find someone who wants to swap homes with them and swap papers. Monitor, prompt and correct where necessary. Take some notes of errors while they are speaking. When all Ss have swapped ask them to sit down. Put some of the errors you noted on the board and ask Ss to correct them. Model and drill. Ask a few Ss to describe their new home. Ss vote for their favorite house.

Productive Task (10-12 minutes) • To give Ss practice in listening for specific information and to expose Ss to the TL in context

Give your instructions about the paragraph you are going to read. Read the paragraph at a natural speed. Ask some basic questions about the context again. (Where is it ? / Is it close to the city centre? / Is it big or small ? etc..) (Give your instructions) Ask Ss to write down the important words; verbs, nouns, adjectives. Read the paragraph again. Look at what Ss have written down to see whether you need to read again. Read the paragraph for the last time (if necessary) and ask Ss to write down more information.

Flexi- stage- Controlled practice (10-12 minutes) • To give Ss practice in their productive skills and provide feedback on their production

Put Ss into groups of 3-4 and together, sharing their information. Nominate one secretary from each group as a writer. Ask Ss to write the complete paragraph. Tell Ss the task is to write the text so that their text has the same meaning as yours. Hand them out the original text to compare against and get them to notice the similarities and differences as feedback.
