Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of Future Probability and its form in the context of making predictions and probabilities

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of vocabulary related to Future Probability
  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in the context of making predictions and probabilities using Future Probability

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Greet students, Introduce yourself to them and ask how they feel. Ask students ''What do you think the weather will be like this week?'', ask them if they are sure or not, then write some of the answers on the board. Introduce the topic by saying ''Today we are going to learn how to talk about future and how sure or unsure we are.''

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a short text and to present the target language via guided discovery

Tell students that you are going to give them a short text and you want them to underline the words that they think shows how sure or unsure the writer is about what is going to happen. Afterwards, hand them the text. When students are done with underlining, gather answers.

Highlighting (5-6 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Show the correctly underlined version of the text since this subject is just being introduced to the students and we need to make sure they comprehend. Group students into three or four. Tell them that you are going to give them cut-outs with the new words and a page with a scale. Ask them to put the words into order according to how sure or unsure these words make them feel. Hand them the materials and give them time to discuss among themselves.

Clarification 1 (3-5 minutes) • To clarify the meaning and pronunciation of the target language

Show students the end result of the probability scale so the degree of probability can be comprehended. Make them read the words from the scale, correct pronounciation when needed.

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Tell students to form pairs, and then fill the blanks in ''activity a'' while discussing their answers with each other. After they are done, play the listening file and ask them to check their answers.

Clarification 2 (4-6 minutes) • To clarify the form of the target language

Within the same pairs, ask them to fill the gaps in ''activity c''. Tell them that they can get assistance from their answers in the ''activity a'' part to figure out the form, after they are done show them the correct answers in order to clarify form.

Semi-Controlled Practice (4-6 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Tell them that they will be working individually for this part, introduce them to the ''activity d'', give instruciton on what they will be doing, Complete the first sentence yourself as an example. Lastly, give them thinking time to come up with answers and then gather answers.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Divide students into two groups, if possible, make them create a circle. Tell them to discuss the questions on ''6a'' and then create an extra question, give them time and let them know you will be expecting answers with the usage of new language. Go around the classroom and monitor the ss. After they are done, choose random students and gather answers from each group.
