Listening
B1 level

Description

In this lesson, students will listen to an audio recording about planning a day in Tokyo. Through the listening material, they will discover different places to visit and learn how to describe experiences and express preferences in English. The lesson is designed to improve students’ listening comprehension skills at B1 level by focusing on both general understanding and detailed information. Students will also develop their ability to use travel-related vocabulary and discuss ideas about visiting new places. During the lesson, learners will participate in a variety of interactive and creative activities, including pair and group work, to practise the language in context. The use of technology and AI tools will help make the learning process more engaging and relevant to students’ real lives.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practise speaking in pairs and groups. To develop confidence using English to give opinions. To use digital tools to present ideas. To improve prediction and guessing skills before listening.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Guess the Country Show 4–5 photos of famous places from different countries. Students try to guess. Ask students which place they would like to visit. Two Truths and a Lie (Travel Edition) Read 3 statements aloud: Tokyo has the busiest pedestrian crossing in the world. Sushi was invented in Tokyo. Tokyo Tower is taller than the Eiffel Tower. Students guess which is the lie (#3 is false: Tokyo Tower is slightly shorter). Transition: Explain they’ll listen to two friends planning a day in Tokyo.

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Prediction Ranking Show photos of 6 possible attractions (Imperial Palace, Disneyland, Yoyogi Park, Karaoke Room). Pairs rank them: 1 = Most likely to visit, 6 = Least likely.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

First Impressions Play the audio. Individually, students write 3 adjectives that describe the day Harry planned (e.g., exciting, unusual, busy). Compare in pairs. Quick Feedback: Ask 2–3 students to share which activity they found most interesting.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Secret Answer Detective Divide students into pairs. Give each pair one secret question (they only focus on this during listening): Play the audio again. Pairs listen carefully and take notes. After listening, each pair becomes the expert and explains their answer to the class.

Post-Reading/Listening (5-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Role Play: Travel Agent Student A = Travel agent in Tokyo Student B = Tourist In pairs, they create a mini-dialogue planning one perfect day: 3 places to visit What to eat One evening activity
