Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of invention
Procedure (41-54 minutes)
In this stage, I will write down a few inventions with their inventors in both active and passive voice (e.g. Thomas Edison invented light bulb. Light bulb was invented by Thomas Edison.)
In this stage, I will ask the students to tell the class about a few inventions that they know of.
In this stage, I will write some of the sentences that the students have made in the correct form on the board to draw their attention to the TL.
I will clarify the meaning of passive voice by pointing out the part of speech of the words in the active sentences and asking some CCQs (What did Thomas Edison make? Light bulb. Do we know who invented light bulb? Yes. What do we focus on? Thomas Edison.) I will also clarify the meaning of passive by asking CCQs (Do we know who made light bulb? No. What do we focus on? Light bulb (object which is the subject of the passive sentence). What do we have after the object at the beginning of the sentence? To be verb. What's the format of the verb in passive voice? Past participle. How can we talk about the subject of a passive sentence? By adding "by + the subject".)
The students are going to do exercise A and B on page 145 in grammar bank for 5 minutes. They will have two minutes to check their answers in pairs and then the answers will be checked with the whole class.
The students will talk about top three most famous inventions in groups and then tell the class which one they think is the best invention in the world.
