Main Aims

  • To practice Ss' skills of Reading for gist and detail with the usage of a text about celebrating birthdays in different cultures

Subsidiary Aims

  • SS will learn about how different cultures celebrate birthdays, and eveluate on said subject
  • Ss will understand and sumarize information from a reading

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Greet Ss, ask them how they feel, have a quick chat about their day. Ask Ss to write their birthday months on a piece of paper and hold it up. Ask students a few lead-in questions about the subject (How they celebrate their birthdays)

Pre-Reading (Brainstorming) (4-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and the topic

Cut out parts of the reading from book will be handed to Ss. Students will be sorted according to their birth month, those that are born in earlier months of the year will get the part of the reading with a smaller number. (The last student will get two last parts, since we don't have enough ss and the last two parts are shorter.) Draw ss' attention to the number, name of the country, and the pictures on top of their part of reading and the title. Ask them to brainstorm about what these numbers might mean and what the text may be about. Discuss their ideas as the whole class.

While-Reading 1 (Reading Jigsaw Activity) (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with a less challenging, shorter reading task.

Tell Ss to read their parts and underline the words that are new to them, especially cultural ones (lion dance, kimono, quinceanera, etc.) Ask students to describe the main idea of their parts in a summarized way to their peers and explain what the numbers of their parts refer to. Tell Ss to share the cultural words they have underlined with the rest of the class, ask them to explain what it means, or have a guess on what it is. After each student explains their cultural concept words, present the visuals to support comprehension.

While-Reading 2 (Detailed Reading) (7-9 minutes) • To provide students with a more detailed reading task and to understand what the text's about as a whole.

Hand Ss the whole print-outs of the book, tell them to read the whole text, not just their parts. Ask ss if what they read overlaps with what their peers expalined about their parts, and if there are any other details they would like to add. Ask CCQs (from the C part of the book) about the text, if there are any errors done by the Ss, encourage their peers to correct.

Post-Reading (Group Discussion) (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with a chance to practice language and reflect on the text.

Tell students that we are going to work as a group for this part (not as pairs, since we have a small number of Ss). Show the questions from the book on the board with the usage of the projector. Tell them to discuss these questions among themselves and answer as a group, encourage them to share their personal thoughts, feelings about the subject.

Post-Reading 2 (Filler/Extra) (4-5 minutes) • To have an extra activity in case we finish early and to give students even further chance to practice the language.

Say ''Now that we have seen how different cultures celebrate their birthdays and what is important for them for these celebrations, I want you to write a short paragraph about Turkish birthday cultures that you know of, if not you can also write down your own habits/customs that you have.'' to Ss. Give two minutes for them to write down, afterwards make them share what they wrote with the rest of the class.
