Description

In this lesson, students will practice their reading and writing skills through a personal e-message text . The lesson starts with talking about an e-message they read. This is followed by reading for gist & specific information and revision of vocabulary for describing people. Finally there is an introduction of writing an e-message where students will end up with writing their own messages.

Main Aims

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T show flags of countries on PPP. Elicit the word "flag" just EC Tell Ss to read the cards and decide which card goes to which country GW.Ss move around and match the cards with flags. T asks "Do you have friends in Mexico? Do you have friends in Japan? etc.Ss answers. what do you do If you want to have a friend in these countries.? W/C FB

Pre-Reading (3-4 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T elicits the meaning "penfriend/ penpal" T shows previous PPT (flags). "This is Gonzales. he lives in Mexico" CCQ> "Does he live in Turkey" No.Where does he live? Mexico. "How do I talk to /communicate with him? " Elicit answer "write a letter/email/e-message" "Do I see him?" "No" "What do I do ?" "write letters" "Is he my friend? What is the word for a friend you write e-messages or exchange letter? T drills the word "penfrend" and write it on W/B ( ECDW)

While-Reading 1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T shows ex1. in PPT. Tell Ss " read the text and discuss your friends what the text is about." ICQ > Are we reading? Yes T gives HOs. Asks Ss "who is writing this? " "me or Barbara? Is it about my friends? No Is it about Barbara"s friend? no Is it about Barbara's family? Yes Ss read the text again and fill the gaps with the words given in the exercise. ICQ> Are we reading? Yes are we writing? Yes.T gives tne HOs.. Ss Pee-check. T monitors and help if needed. FB> Put 4 cards on the W/B."brother/ sister/parents/mother" Nominate Ss to put the cards on the gaps in PPT.

While-Reading 2 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

T shows Ss PPT. Ask" Is he fat?" No ."He is...." Is she fat? No. She is.." T elicit and Drill. T introduce ex.2 Ss read the text and decide T or F. ICQ> Are we listening? No, Are we reading? yes, Are we writing ? yes Ss do the task and they peer-check. T monitors and help if needed. T encourages strong students help the weak ones. W/C FB.

Post-Reading/Writing (15-18 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T introduce ex.3 Tell Ss do the task and put "is" or "has" .Model the task on the W/B "My brother's name ___ Erkan. He ___ brown eyes. " T gives HOs. Monitor and help İf needed. Ss walk around and check the answers with their friends. Ss go and take the envelopes ( answer keys) . T introduces ex5. Tell Ss to write about their family. ICQ> are we writing? " Yes. T gives HOs. T monitors and helps if needed. T nominates Ss for FB. T introduce ex6. Ss read the text and discuss the Q with a partner. ICQ > Are we reading?" Yes "Are we speaking" Yes FB > Ss tells their partner's answers. ( CCQs here. Does she want to know about your friends? NO, Does she want to know about your familiy? yes) T elicit what they write is an email in reply. "Write an answer to Barbara". T models the task "I am Eda, I am 28 years old. My mother's name is ...
