Procedure (69-92 minutes)
Ask SS to look at the photo on p 19 for a few seconds. Tell SS to close their books and ask them “What holiday items did you see in the photo?” Elicit responses and write the items on the board. Have SS open their books to check the answers. Tell SS to work in pairs and make a list of common holiday items in two minutes. Elicit answers from pairs and put their ideas on the board.
Write some key words on the board such as sightseeing, souvenir, and hostel. Ask SS to explain the meanings of these words. If students are unsure, provide explanations and drill pronunciation if necessary. Ask CCQs such as “What is a souvenir? What’s the difference between a hotel and a hostel?”
Instruct Ss to open their books to page 134 and look at ex 2 A. Have Ss listen to the recording for ex 2A and match the items they hear to the pictures. Elicit the answers and then have the whole class repeat the vocabulary words together. Tell SS to listen to the recording for ex 2C and fill in the gaps. Have them pair-check answers before eliciting them.
Ask SS which of the items from exe 2 A they take on holiday and encourage them to extend their answers by giving reasons or examples. For ex 2 D, instruct SS to work in pairs to discuss their last holiday, focusing on which of the activities from ex 2C they did.
Ask SS to look at ex 1 A, p 20 and discuss which ways of travel they prefer and why. Instruct SS to look at ex 1 B. Tell them to examine the travel problems in the pictures and discuss which situation they dislike the most. Monitor them closely and get a whole class feedback.
Ask SS to open their books to p 134 and look at ex 2 A. Tell SS to listen to the recording and match the words in bold with their definitions. Ask CCQs such as “What does hitchhike mean?” or “What is the meaning of travel around?” to ensure understanding. Instruct SS to cover the sentences in 2 A and use the map on p 135 to retell the story. Set a 2-minute time limit and encourage learners to incorporate the vocabulary they just practiced. Have SS move on to ex 2 C where they match travel problems with the corresponding pictures on p 135. Tell SS to listen to the recording in ex 2 D to check their answers. Instruct SS to answer the questions in ex 2F by discussing their answers in pairs. Monitor them closely and get a whole class feedback.
Tell SS to look at ex 2 A on p 20. Ask them to look at the picture and headline. Encourage them to share their ideas with the class. Get a whole class feedback.
In ex 2 B, tell SS to listen to the recording and check if their predictions were correct. Play the audio again and ask SS to listen for what the woman says about different topics. Have students pair check their answers. Conduct whole class feedback.
Ask SS the question from ex 2D: “Do you believe the woman’s story? Why or why not?” Have SS discuss and share their opinions with the class. Get a whole class feedback.
In ex 3A, tell students to listen and complete the sentences using Past Continuous verbs. In ex 3B, ask students to underline the Past Simple verbs in the sentences and pair-check their answers. In ex 3C, tell students to answer the questions. Elicit answers and get whole class feedback.
Write selected sentences from ex 3A and elicit their form. Explain the use of the past continuous tense and its difference with the past simple tense by drawing a timeline on the board. Ask concept-checking questions such as “Was the action finished or in progress?” and “Do we use was or were with you?” to check students’ understanding.
Tell SS to look at ex 3 H on p 21 and complete the sentences using either the past continuous or past simple tense. Give SS two minutes to do the exercise individually and then pair-check their answers. Elicit answers from different SS and provide whole-class feedback.
Ask SS reflective questions such as “How do we form past continuous tense? Which exercise did you find the easiest and hardest in today’s lesson?
