Elif's Time Words Lesson
Low Intermediate, Grade 5, B1 level

Description

In this lesson, students learn about the time words through guided discovery based on a listening to a conversation of two students about their general life. The lesson is started with questions about time by teacher. This is followed by listening to a conversation where students can see various kinds of time words and do a match-up exersice, sentence reformulation. Finally, there is some controlled practice by using them in sentences.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Asking the students to describe what they did in the weekend Personalize the topic e.g I stayed with my grandmother during the weekend.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Provide an auido material ( a converstaion between 2 students about their daily life empahsizing time words) and give the written form of the conversation to make following the listening easier and see clearly) Model and drill Give the students a match-up exercise to match the right time words with the given descriptions

Highlighting (5-9 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Show a caricature of a student that describes what he did in the last week with small pictures Ask students to make sentences that describe what the boy did in the caricature by following the order and giving emphasize the time words in pairs

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Provide each student a time words hand out. Write down example sentences for each time word e.g I haven't done it yet. / I haven't seen him for weeks. / I waited until six and then left. Elicit the meanings Get the students to make sentences by using time words Monitor the students and help where necessary Do delayed correction on the board if necessary Ask the students to make senteces

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Provide each student a cloze test. The students fill in the the gaps with given time words below the text in pairs. The students who finish the activitiy earlier record their answers onto the board. Get w/c feedback. Elicit incorrect answers onto the board.

Free Practice (6-7 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ask the students to tell each other their last week,present time and what they plan to do in the next week in an order and by using the time words. Monitor the students for delayed feedback. Get a few ideas. Do delayed error correction if necessary.
